With The Sun Places, we want this experience to be part of your luxury stay, offering you the chance to walk through the same courtyards and warehouses that have seen nine generations of winemakers grow.
Bodegas La Cigarrera is much more than a winery: it is a journey back in time to the essence of Manzanilla de Sanlúcar. Its origins date back to 1758, when the merchant Don Joseph Colóm Darbó, originally from Barcelona and settled in Sanlúcar, took on lease some properties in Callejón del Truco to start a wine business.
Today, the winery remains in the same original premises, managed by the ninth generation of the family. This is the place where tradition and the taste of history can be savoured in every glass.
History of Bodegas La Cigarrera: a legacy of nine generations
The history of Bodegas La Cigarrera is the history of a family that has dedicated its life to manzanilla. It all began in 1758, when Don Joseph Colóm Darbó, originally from Barcelona and established in Sanlúcar, took on lease some properties located in Callejón del Truco. Together with his son, Don Francisco de Paula Colóm Borrego, he founded the company "Colóm y Compañía" in 1771, laying the foundations of what we now know as Bodegas La Cigarrera.
In 1802, the winery experienced its first major expansion with the purchase of new premises from Don José Helvant, located on Calle Torno (now Madre de Dios), which were integrated into the winery complex.
Forty years later, in 1842, Don Rafael Colóm y Palma acquired the wine-houses in their entirety, consolidating the family's heritage in the heart of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
The key moment came in 1891, when Don Manuel Hidalgo Colóm, great-grandfather of the current managers, took a decisive step: he launched the manzanilla on the market under the name that would make it world-famous: "La Cigarrera".
Under his leadership, the wine business continued to grow and expand, consolidating the winery's reputation as one of the most prestigious in the Marco de Jerez.
For decades, the winery was dedicated to the wholesale business, selling its wines to large houses such as Lustau for them to bottle under their own brand.
It wasn't until 1998, following changes in the Denomination of Origin regulations, that the winery began to market its own bottled wines under the "La Cigarrera" brand.
Today, the Hidalgo García de Velasco brothers represent the ninth generation of this winemaking dynasty, keeping alive a tradition that dates back over 265 years.
Currently, the winery has 1,637 square metres of winemaking facilities, where they age and offer the public their manzanilla, amontillado, oloroso, moscatel and pedro ximénez.
Where are Bodegas La Cigarrera located?
Bodegas La Cigarrera are located at Plaza Madre de Dios, in the historic centre of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, right on the boundary that divides the Barrio Alto from the Barrio Bajo, and next to the Market.
Its privileged location, in the lower part of the city, makes it ideal for the ageing of manzanilla, as the higher humidity and proximity to the mouth of the Guadalquivir directly influence the quality of the wine.
The complex consists of three ageing warehouses (Bodega de Colóm, Bodega de Cabral and Bodega de Sarnilla) arranged around a beautiful 18th-century Andalusian central courtyard.
The wines of Bodegas La Cigarrera: manzanilla as their flagship
The production of Bodegas La Cigarrera is mainly dedicated to the ageing of its famous Manzanilla La Cigarrera. This wine, which experts describe as "clean, fresh and pungent", is a perfect example of the style that made Sanlúcar famous.
In addition to manzanilla, the winery produces other sherry-style wines under the Denominations of Origin "Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda" and "Jerez-Xérès-Sherry":
- Manzanilla Pasada: A wine with 12 years of biological ageing in American oak barrels, old gold in colour with saline and almond notes. It is made from only 9 barrels located in the Sarnilla and Cabral warehouses.
- Amontillado: Ideal for aperitifs, with a drier and more complex profile. The winery has a VOS (Very Old Sherry) amontillado of over 20 years from the family Sacristy, reserved for special occasions.
- Oloroso: Perfect for pairing with cured meats and nuts.
- Natural Sweet Wines: Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel, with a silky flavour and ideal for accompanying desserts.
The origin of the name "La Cigarrera": a tribute to the women of Sanlúcar
The name of the winery, "La Cigarrera", is a tribute to the women who used to sell cigarettes in the streets of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
It is a homage to the pride, beauty and history of this Andalusian port city, whose origins are linked to tobacco and maritime trade. A curiosity that adds a touch of romance and tradition to the winery's history.
