Casa Pepe de la Judería, Almost a Century of History, Tradition and Flavour in the Heart of Córdoba

Casa Pepe de la Judería, Almost a Century of History, Tradition and Flavour in the Heart of Córdoba

🏛️   Casa Pepe de la Judería is much more than a restaurant. It is a piece of Córdoba's living history, a place where time seems to have stood still to preserve the essence of the taverns of yesteryear.

Since its founding in 1929 by José Jiménez Aroca, popularly known as "Pepe de la Judería", this establishment has been a meeting point for Cordobans, regulars and illustrious visitors. Throughout its almost 100 years of history, it has maintained its philosophy intact: to offer good service, a good dish and affection towards the customer, the supplier and the workers.

In this guide, The Sun Places reveals all the secrets of this legendary corner.

Where is Casa Pepe de la Judería located?

🏛️   Casa Pepe de la Judería is located at Calle Romero, number 1, in the heart of the Judería, the most emblematic and touristy district of Córdoba. Its location is unbeatable: just a 2-minute walk from the Mosque-Cathedral, 5 minutes from the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs and 3 minutes from the famous Calleja de las Flores.

The venue has a ground-floor tavern with an Andalusian-style bar, several rooms and lounges, an interior patio typical of Cordoban houses, and an upper terrace with unmistakable views of the bell tower of the Mosque. Its capacity is 150 people.

History of Casa Pepe de la Judería: from "El Triunfo" tavern to a century-old institution

The history of Casa Pepe de la Judería begins long before 1929. The premises already existed as a tavern under the name "El Triunfo", run by Manuel Criado.

In 1928, José Jiménez Aroca (1904-1985), a 25-year-old young man who had worked as a kitchen hand at the "Cuatro Naciones" hotel and as head chef at the Simón hotel, bought the tavern for 7,500 pesetas.

Over the years, "El Triunfo" would end up changing its name to the one we all know today: Casa Pepe de la Judería.

Pepe, as everyone called him, was a humble, home-loving man of great humanity. Although his cooking could have elevated him to the highest levels, he decided to stay in his city, serving customers and friends in his tavern with exquisite quality.

Among the most illustrious names who passed through there, the highlight is Ángelo Roncalli, who was the Nuncio of H.H. in Paris and would later be crowned as Pope John XXIII in 1958. Pepe always said that his tavern was a "pilgrimage centre" and that, if he had charged per visit, he would have amassed a fortune.

Pepe ran the tavern until the day of his death, 1 August 1985. In 1994, Miguel Cabezas (Puente Genil, 1963) and his wife, Lola Carmona, took over the business.

In 2001, they carried out a reconstruction and modernisation, expanding the premises with two more floors dedicated to dining, but respecting the original patio and ground floor. They recovered Pepe's idea of serving tapas and half portions, an innovation at that time.

In recognition of its age and trajectory, Casa Pepe de la Judería has been recognised as a Historic Tavern by the Córdoba City Council, forming part of a select group of 12 taverns with this seal in the city.

Among its awards also stand out the Bronze Plaque for Tourist Merit (1970), presented by Ramón Serrano Suñer, and the Golden Frying Pan during the first gastronomic days of Córdoba (1978).
