Calle Betis is the great showcase of Triana, the most authentic and traditional neighbourhood of Seville. With its colourful facades facing the river, its lively terraces and its unmistakable atmosphere, it has become one of the most photographed and visited places in the city.
Its name comes from the Roman name for the Guadalquivir, the River Betis, and was approved by the City Council in 1859. Before that, it was known as Calle del Río, Vera del Río, Orilla del Río or Acera del Río.
Its history is linked to the river and the life of Triana, and today it is the perfect place to enjoy the gastronomy, leisure and the best views of Seville.
📜 History of Calle Betis: from flood defence wall to Seville's most emblematic promenade
The history of Calle Betis is the history of the relationship between the Triana Neighbourhood and the Guadalquivir. For centuries, this area was a port area with wharves and warehouses linked to river trade.
The street was formed by the construction of houses parallel to the river from the Middle Ages onwards, in the shadow of the castle that stood on the Altozano and which constituted the original nucleus of Triana.
Until the end of the 18th century, the part closest to the river lacked organisation and protection against frequent floods.
In 1787, work began on a defensive wall or dyke against flooding, which ran from the Altozano to the church of Santa Ana.
This work elevated the street and protected it from the river's rising waters, giving the street its current configuration. The definitive urban planning was consolidated in 1852, with the construction of the Triana Bridge (Isabel II Bridge), which replaced the old pontoon bridge and definitively connected Triana with the centre of Seville. The street was cobbled and paved in 1906 and asphalted in 1933.

Calle Betis connects two key points of Triana: Plaza del Altozano to the north, where the Triana Bridge is located, and Plaza de Cuba to the south, where San Telmo Bridge stands.
This route of approximately 600 metres offers one of the most privileged perspectives of the city. From its terraces, you can see some of Seville's most emblematic monuments: the Torre del Oro, the Giralda, the Maestranza Theatre and, in the background, Plaza de España.
The colourful facades of the houses, without urban uniformity, create a cheerful collage that is one of Seville's most typical images.
Among the most notable buildings is the Casa de las Columnas, a large mansion from the late 18th century that stands on the site of the old University of Mareantes, where sailors who set off on expeditions to America were trained.
The street is also the place where, according to a commemorative plaque, the first meeting of the poet Antonio Machado's parents took place.
