📜 History of Bodegas Barbadillo

The origin of a legend

The history of Bodegas Barbadillo begins in the 19th century, when Benigno Barbadillo y Hortigüela, originally from Covarrubias (Burgos), returned to Spain after spending twenty years in Mexico, where he made his fortune. Together with his cousin Manuel López Barbadillo, he settled in Sanlúcar de Barrameda and, in 1821, acquired his first winery: "El Toro", a building that still stands today and is a witness to the origins of Bodegas Barbadillo.

The year 1827 was a milestone for Bodegas Barbadillo. They sent the first casks of manzanilla to Philadelphia and, months later, launched "Pastora" on the market, the first and then only bottled manzanilla in the world. Benigno died in 1837, but his legacy continued to grow. It was his grandson, Antonio Barbadillo Ambrossy, who formally established the company now known as Bodegas Barbadillo in 1954.

Today, Bodegas Barbadillo is one of the oldest family businesses in Spain and is now in its sixth generation. It is the only winery of its kind that lives almost exclusively from wine and exports to more than fifty countries. Bodegas Barbadillo is, without a doubt, the reference house of Sanlúcar de Barrameda and the largest producer of manzanilla in the Sherry region.

What are the Wines and Manzanillas of Bodegas Barbadillo?

🍷 The wines of Bodegas Barbadillo: From manzanilla to Spain's best-selling white wine

Bodegas Barbadillo produces a wide variety of wines: manzanillas, sherries, brandies, Tierra de Cádiz wines… But there are two names that resonate with special force.

🥂 Manzanilla Solear: The queen of Sanlúcar

  • Manzanilla is the soul of Bodegas Barbadillo. This wine, aged under the mantle of the westerly wind, acquires a saline and fresh character that makes it unique in the world. Bodegas Barbadillo is the largest producer of manzanilla in Spain and the undisputed leader in its ageing.

🏰 Castillo de San Diego: The pioneer

  • In 1975, Bodegas Barbadillo launched the first white wine from the Sherry region onto the market: Castillo de San Diego, named after the street where the winery was located, right next to Sanlúcar Castle. It was a milestone, a turning point that today, 50 years later, remains the best-selling white wine in Spain.

🌿 New bets: Organic and frizzante

  • Bodegas Barbadillo does not live only in the past. It has launched organic wines such as Sábalo (tribute to water), Patinegro (to air) and Tamarix (an orange wine made from Muscatel grapes that pays homage to the land). It has also bet on low-alcohol wines with its Barbadillo Vi range, which includes a rosé frizzante.

🌊 Where are Bodegas Barbadillo located?

Bodegas Barbadillo are located in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in the province of Cádiz, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River and facing the Doñana National Park. Their main address is Calle Luis Eguilaz, 11 and the enotourism office is at Calle Sevilla, 6.

The winery covers an area of almost 75,000 square metres, spread over 16 different wineries dedicated to different types of wine. Among them are La Arboledilla, known as the "Cathedral of Manzanilla", and San Guillermo, one of the best kept secrets of Bodegas Barbadillo.

✨What does Bodegas Barbadillo represent for Sanlúcar and for THE SUN PLACES?

Bodegas Barbadillo are much more than a company. They are the soul of Sanlúcar. As their own motto says, "Barbadillo is south and it is sea. It is Cádiz and it is westerly wind. It is Sanlúcar and it is tradition". They are a symbol of the identity of a city that lives looking at the river and the sea.
