Get ready for the Seville April Fair 2026

Seville April Fair 2026: dates, tradition and everything you need to know to experience the happiest festival of the year. Seville gets ready to dress up in polka dots, lanterns and joy.

📅 When is the Seville April Fair 2026?

The Seville April Fair 2026 will be held from Tuesday 21st to Sunday 26th April. The pre-festival event will take place on Monday 20th April with the traditional Night of the Little Fish (Noche del Pescaíto), an open-air dinner where fried fish is the absolute star, serving as the perfect prelude to what is to come.

That same night, after midnight, the long-awaited Lighting (popularly known as the "Alumbrao") will take place, the moment when thousands of LED lights illuminate the entrance gate and the fairground streets, creating an impressive visual spectacle accompanied by fireworks.

The only local holiday during the Fair will be Fair Wednesday, 22nd April, a key day to enjoy the atmosphere without the weekend crowds and which allows many Sevillians to extend the party into the early hours. The closing will be on Sunday 26th April at 11:59 PM with a great fireworks display by the Guadalquivir River, one of the most emotional moments to bid farewell to the big week.

🏛️ A gateway with history: a tribute to Charles V and Isabella of Portugal

The April Fair Gateway is the great symbol of the fairground and each year surprises with a unique design. In 2026, the gateway is designed by the Italian architect Davide Gambini, who also created the 2024 one, and its design has a very special meaning: it commemorates the 5th Centenary of the wedding of Emperor Charles V with Isabella of Portugal, celebrated in the Royal Alcázar of Seville in 1526.

The design is a fusion of two emblematic architectural elements:

The Pavilion of Portugal from the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, the work of the brothers Carlos and Guilherme Rebelo de Andrade

The Pavilion of Charles V in the Royal Alcázar, incorporating the ornamentation of its tiles

The structure is 50 metres wide, 40 metres high and between 4 and 7 metres deep, with a large central dome of 26 metres as the most visible element, five connecting arches and two side towers, recovering the monumentality not seen since 2019. It will feature more than 28,000 LED bulbs that will illuminate the entrance to the fairground.

An important novelty is that, for the first time in 57 years, the gateway will not be assembled by the company Ferrovial, but by Heliopol (Rusvel group), which submitted the best economic offer and has committed to dismantling it in about 45 days to free up traffic in the Los Remedios neighbourhood. Assembly began on 16th January 2026 with the ceremonial act of placing the first tube by the Major Festivals delegate, Manuel Alés.

📜Origin and history of the Seville April Fair 2026

The April Fair was born in 1846 as a livestock market promoted by José María Ybarra and Narciso Bonaplata. The first edition was held in 1847 at the Prado de San Sebastián, with only 19 marquees and about 25,000 visitors. Over the years, the fair ceased to be a commercial event and became the great popular festival we know today.

Since 1973, the Fair has been held at the Real de la Feria, located in the Los Remedios neighbourhood, a 64,000 square metre site that for one week is transformed into a city of lanterns and marquees. More than 500,000 people gather each year to enjoy the music, dance, gastronomy and unique atmosphere of the fairground.

In 2024, the people of Seville decided in a public consultation (with 52% of the votes) to return to the traditional short format from Tuesday to Sunday, which is maintained in this 2026 edition.

🎪 The Fairground (Real de la Feria): an ephemeral city with over a thousand marquees

The fairground is a spectacle in itself. The streets, decorated with lights and lanterns, house more than a thousand marquees and are named after famous bullfighters, with a brief biography on the back of the signs. The ground is covered with albero, that yellowish earth so characteristic of Andalusia.

For the 2026 edition, the City Council plans to incorporate almost 200 additional marquees to the fairground as part of an ambitious expansion project that will include four new streets beyond Costillares Street. Work will begin once this year's fair is over so that it becomes a reality in 2027.

🏠 The Marquees (Casetas): the Heart of the Fair

The marquees are the soul of the festival, the place where Sevillians and visitors gather to sing, dance, eat and drink. It is important to know the difference between the two types of marquees.

Type of Marquee:

Public - Open to all attendees

Managed by municipal districts, political parties, unions or social entities. Ideal for first-time visitors

Private - By invitation only

Belonging to families, social clubs or companies. More intimate and exclusive atmosphere

If you don't have contacts in Seville, don't worry. There is a myth that without an invitation you can't enter any marquee, but it is completely false. At the entrance to the fairground there are information kiosks where you can pick up a map with the location of all the public marquees.

Among the best-known public marquees are those of the municipal districts (Triana, Nervión, Macarena, etc.), as well as those of institutions such as the University of Seville or the City Council.

🍤 Typical gastronomy and drinks. The April Fair is also an event that stands out for its rich gastronomy.

Emblematic Dishes

  • Fried fish (Pescaíto frito): The undisputed king of the fair, especially on the opening night. It includes anchovies, whiting, squid and marinated fish, battered and fried until crispy
  • Iberian ham: Sliced thin, essential in any marquee
  • Salmorejo: The Cordoban version of gazpacho, with hard-boiled egg and ham
  • Grilled prawns and Spanish omelette
  • Churros with chocolate: Tradition dictates eating them upon returning from the fair, even at 6 in the morning, with churrerías full of people of all ages

Popular Drinks

  • Rebujito: The undisputed star of the celebration. It is a refreshing mix of manzanilla wine and lemon-lime soda, served in large jugs to share. Our advice: take it easy, because it's more deceptive than it seems
  • Manzanilla: A fortified wine made in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, served cold and perfectly accompanies the typical fair dishes

🐎 The Horse Parade: tradition and elegance

Until 8:00 PM, the fairground fills with hundreds of horses, riders and richly adorned carriages. Men wear the traditional short riding suit and women wear the flamenco dress, with ruffles, polka dots and bright colours. It is one of the most distinctive and photogenic elements of the fair, a display of Andalusian nobility that is best contemplated calmly from a good position.

🎡 The "Hell Street" (Calle del Infierno)

This area, within the fairground, is full of attractions for all ages: roller coasters for adrenaline lovers, shooting galleries, children's games and stalls selling sweets, churros, candy floss and fritters. It is the perfect place if you are going with children or simply to take a break from the marquee pace with some fun.

🎶 The Sevillana: the star dance

Music and dance are deeply rooted traditions at the Fair. The Sevillana stands as the most characteristic dance, performed in pairs, with a 12-beat rhythm and four well-differentiated parts. If you've never danced a Sevillana, don't worry: just by watching how others do it and letting yourself be carried away by the atmosphere, you've already gained a lot.

🐂 The Bullfighting Fair at the Maestranza

The Real Maestranza Bullring in Seville hosts an intense bullfighting programme during the April Fair. These are some of the most outstanding line-ups:

👗 What to wear at the April Fair?

Although the "official" uniform is the eye-catching flamenco dresses and the short riding suit, in reality everyone wears whatever they feel like. Don't hesitate to wear your jeans if that's what you want; no one will look at you strangely or think you're not dressed appropriately. There is a rumour that if you don't dress smartly you'll stand out, but it's not true. The Fair is for enjoying, and everyone dresses as they please.
