📜 What is the History of Cádiz Central Market?
The history of the Central Market begins in 1837, when the City Council decided to build a market to supply the city on land it had acquired after the Mendizábal land confiscations. The chosen site was a former orchard belonging to the Discalced Franciscan convent. It is curious that the land where the friars grew their own food became the space that would supply the entire city.
The original design was by the architect Torcuato Benjumeda, although the construction was completed by Juan Daura after Benjumeda's death. The foundation stone was laid on April 27, 1837, and in December 1838 the porticoed square, in the Neoclassical style, was inaugurated. It has a rectangular layout with 4-meter-high Doric columns.
In 1928, during the term of Mayor Ramón de Carranza, a major renovation was carried out by the Sevillian architect Juan Talavera. A central covered pavilion was built, divided into two large halls: one for fishmongers and the other for meat. Strict hygiene controls were established, and vendors were required to wear white clothing—a measure that, incidentally, inspired a famous Carnival tango.
In the 21st century, between 2007 and 2009, a thorough renovation was undertaken, giving the market its current appearance: brighter and more functional. This work was carried out by the architect Carlos Riaño. The number of stalls was reduced from 250 to 173, the old buildings were demolished, and a large central structure was built, which now houses the fishmongers.
In December 2019, the Cádiz Central Market was declared a Site of Cultural Interest, recognizing its heritage and historical value.
