The Gràcia Vermouth Route, Barcelona's most authentic tradition

The Gràcia Vermouth Route, Barcelona's most authentic tradition

🍷  When the clock strikes twelve noon in Barcelona, the Gràcia neighbourhood awakens with a sacred ritual: the Vermouth Route.

It is not an organised event with fixed dates, but a living tradition that thrives every weekend and reaches its peak on World Vermouth Day, which in 2026 falls on Tuesday 7 April.

On that day, and also on Saturdays and Sundays, the squares and streets of Gràcia fill with locals and visitors who tour its iconic wine cellars and taverns to enjoy a glass of vermouth accompanied by olives, preserves or a tapa.

At The Sun Places, we want you to live this immersive luxury experience by staying in our apartments located in areas like Passeig de Gràcia and The Gothic Quarter, from where you can easily reach this authentic temple of Catalan culture.

🥂  The Gràcia Vermouth Route is not a signposted route or an event with a single itinerary; it is a custom deeply rooted in Barcelona's identity, especially in this neighbourhood that retains its village essence.

Gràcia, annexed to the city in 1897, maintains an independent character, with narrow streets, lively squares and a neighbourhood life that refuses to disappear.

On weekends, from 11:30 or 12:00 noon, locals and savvy visitors begin the "vermut": an aperitif of house, artisan or classic vermouth, accompanied by a small tapa (seasoned olives, anchovies, pickled mussels, crisps, a single olive or a banderilla).

The route has no set order, but there are mandatory stops:

  • Bar Bodega Quimet (founded in 1954)
  • Vermutería del Tano (with decades of history)
  • Bar Canigó (since 1922)
  • and more modern ones like Bodega Bonavista, Bar Calders or La Vermu

In 2026, the tradition takes on special relevance because 7 April is World Vermouth Day, a day when many of these vermouth bars organise tastings, special pairings and exclusive offers.

Furthermore, throughout April, coinciding with Sant Jordi's Day (23 April), some vermouth bars offer vermouth infused with rose and poetry books.

The route is perfect for lovers of slow luxury, because there's no rush: you can start at one wine cellar, stroll through Plaça de la Virreina, continue at another, and finish with lunch at a neighbourhood restaurant or return to the centre to savour the haute cuisine of Passeig de Gràcia.

📅   When is the Gràcia Vermouth Route?

The Gràcia Vermouth Route can be enjoyed any weekend of the year, but there are key dates in 2026 that make it an unmissable event.

The most important is Tuesday 7 April 2026, World Vermouth Day, when most vermouth bars organise special activities: sommelier-led tastings, limited edition vermouths, pairings with oysters or caviar, and live music.

Another notable date is Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 April, the weekend closest to Sant Jordi's Day (23 April), where you can combine the route with buying books and roses at the stalls in Plaça Catalunya and Las Ramblas. Also on weekends in June, coinciding with Sónar or Primavera Sound, the route fills with international tourists discovering this tradition.

The typical vermouth hours are from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, although many places also open in the afternoons. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, Thursday afternoons are also a good option, though with less atmosphere.

To experience it with maximum luxury, we recommend Saturday 5 April (before World Day) or Sunday 6 April, to arrive rested for Tuesday's celebration.

📍 Where is the Gràcia Vermouth Route located?

The epicentre of the Vermouth Route is the Gràcia neighbourhood, one of Barcelona's most unique districts, located north of the city, between Avinguda Diagonal and Park Güell.

If you stay with The Sun Places on Passeig de Gràcia, you can walk along Gran de Gràcia street in about 20 minutes.

Once in the neighbourhood, the main streets of the route are Carrer Verdi, Plaça de la Virreina, Carrer de Mozart, Plaça de la Revolució and Carrer Torrijos.

The neighbourhood is also home to two of Gaudí's most emblematic works: Casa Vicens (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and The Gates of Park Güell, which you can visit before or after the route.

If you prefer a more relaxed plan, after vermouth you can stroll through the Gothic Quarter or El Born to aid digestion.

📜  History of the Vermouth Route

The history of vermouth in Catalonia dates back to the 19th century, when wineries in Penedès and Priorat began producing this drink made from white wine flavoured with herbs (wormwood, gentian, clove, cinnamon, etc.).

However, the tradition of vermouth as a Sunday aperitif became popular in Barcelona in the early 20th century, especially in working-class neighbourhoods and expanding areas of the city.

Gràcia, which was an independent municipality until 1897, maintained its village identity and customs. The old "cafés cantants" and neighbourhood wine cellars were the first to serve draught vermouth, accompanied by olives and pickles.

Bodega Quimet, opened in 1954, is one of the oldest still in operation; its wooden interior and oak barrels are a living museum.

Vermutería del Tano, run by the same family since the 1960s, retains the charm of old-fashioned wine cellars. In the 1990s, the vermouth route became established as a social phenomenon, and in the 2010s it experienced a renaissance thanks to the rise of artisanal and signature vermouths. Today,

Gràcia is the heart of this tradition, and World Vermouth Day (established in 2015 by the International Vermouth Association) is celebrated with special intensity in this neighbourhood.

In 2026, the 10th anniversary of the first Gràcia vermouth fair, which took place in 2016 in Plaça de la Virreina, is also celebrated.

Throughout the year, Gràcia's vermouth bars offer more than 50 varieties of vermouth, from the classic Reus styles (Yzaguirre, Miró) to their own creations aged in barrels or infused with fruit.

🧑‍💼 Who organises the Gràcia Vermouth Route?

The Gràcia Vermouth Route is not an event organised by a single entity, but a spontaneous tradition maintained by the bars, wine cellars and the neighbourhood's merchants' association, Comerços de Gràcia.

However, for World Vermouth Day (7 April) and special events, the association Vermut Catalunya and the Barcelona Hospitality Guild coordinate activities such as tastings, street concerts and discounts.

Barcelona City Council, through the Gràcia district, supports the initiative by installing tables and chairs in the squares and providing street cleaning. Vermouth wineries such as Yzaguirre, Miró, Padró & Co. and Lustau also participate, often sponsoring some of the activities.

In 2026, the organisation has prepared an official route with a passport: attendees can get their passport stamped at each vermouth bar and, upon completing 5 stamps, receive a vermouth glass engraved with the neighbourhood's logo.

In addition, information points have been set up at Plaça de la Virreina and Plaça de la Revolució.

For those with a sweet tooth, a "Solidarity Vermouth" is organised where part of the price of each glass goes towards restoring Gràcia's modernist heritage, such as Casa Vicens or Park Güell.

🌟  What the Vermouth Route represents for Barcelona, Catalonia and The Sun Places

The Vermouth Route is much more than a gastronomic fad: it is a symbol of Catalan identity, a social ritual and an economic engine for neighbourhoods.

According to a study by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, vermouth generates an impact of more than 200 million euros annually in the Catalan economy, just in the hospitality sector.

In Gràcia, more than 50,000 glasses of vermouth are served on weekends, and the figure doubles on World Vermouth Day. For Barcelona, this tradition projects an image of an authentic city, where local culture and good food remain alive.

For The Sun Places, the vermouth route represents the perfect opportunity to connect our guests with the most genuine essence of the city, combining it with the luxury of our apartments.

We want you to be able to rest on a terrace overlooking Passeig de Gràcia or in an apartment designed by a renowned architect after touring Gràcia's wine cellars.

We also offer exclusive services such as a private tour with a sommelier of the best vermouth bars, including luxury car transport, and the possibility of booking tables at the city's most exclusive restaurants, such as Disfrutar Restaurant or those awarded with the Barcelona Restoration Awards.

We can also organise a vertical vermouth tasting in your own apartment, with the best varieties from Catalonia and a board of premium seafood and preserves.

🍽️  Gastronomy and peculiarities of the Vermouth Route

The perfect pairing for vermouth is quality tapas and preserves.

On the Gràcia route, you'll always find arbequina olives, Cantabrian anchovies, pickled mussels, gherkin and anchovy banderillas, bagged crisps (a classic) and natural cockles.

Some more modern vermouth bars also offer tuna tataki, oysters, river caviar or acorn-fed Iberian ham.

At Bodega Bonavista, they serve a signature vermouth aged in French oak barrels, accompanied by a red prawn croquette.

At Bar Calders, the speciality is vermouth with orange and cinnamon, which pairs with Roman-style squid.

During World Vermouth Day (7 April), many vermouth bars offer tasting menus for 15-20 euros including three glasses of vermouth and three tapas.

A fun fact: vermouth is traditionally served in a balloon glass, with a slice of orange or lemon, an olive and an ice cube (or without ice, to taste).

In Gràcia, you can ask for "house vermouth" (draught) or "signature vermouth" (bottled). The average price per glass is between €2.50 and €4.

If you want a luxury experience, at La Vermu you can order a bottle of 10-year reserve vermouth with a numbered label, costing €45 and serving 6-8 glasses.
