📜 History of FC Barcelona
The history of FC Barcelona dates back to 29 November 1899, when the Swiss Hans Gamper founded the club at the Solé Gymnasium in Barcelona.
A year later, in 1900, the club adopted its first crest, which already included the cross of Saint George and the four bars.
Since then, Barça has grown to become one of the most decorated clubs in the world: 27 Leagues, 31 Copas del Rey, 14 Spanish Super Cups, 5 Champions Leagues (1992, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2015), 5 European Super Cups and 3 Club World Cups.
But FC Barcelona is known as "more than a club" for its social commitment and its identification with Catalonia. The motto «Més que un club» was first used by president Narcís de Carreras in his inauguration speech on 17 January 1968, to define the social significance that the club had.
Years later, in 1973, Agustí Montal i Costa adopted it as an electoral slogan, definitively popularising it: «Barça is something more than a football club».
During the Franco dictatorship, Camp Nou became a symbol of cultural resistance and a space of freedom where Catalans could express their identity.
🤴Presidents who marked the history of FC Barcelona
Throughout its history, FC Barcelona has had 41 presidents.
Notable figures include the founder Joan Gamper, who presided over the club in five terms (1908, 1910, 1917, 1921 and 1924), consolidating the institution and leading it to its first successes.
- Josep Lluís Núñez, elected in 1978 in the first elections with universal suffrage, marked a turning point by modernising the club and presiding over it for 22 years
- After his departure, Joan Gaspart succeeded him, although he only completed half of his term
- In 2003, Joan Laporta was elected president, beginning a golden era with Pep Guardiola's "Dream Team"
Today, in 2026, the entity remains a world reference, with a team led by Hansi Flick that has brought back the excitement to the fans and has won LaLiga and the Spanish Super Cup this same season.
During the 2025-2026 season, FC Barcelona won its 29th league title in a classic against Real Madrid, becoming champions for the second consecutive year.
🌟 The legend of Johan Cruyff and his Cruyff Foundation
No figure better represents the transformation and essence of FC Barcelona than Johan Cruyff.
Considered one of the most influential figures in football history, the Dutchman arrived in Barcelona in 1973 and revolutionised the club. As a player, he won one League (1973-74), being elected Ballon d'Or on three occasions (1971, 1973 and 1974).
But his most important legacy came as a coach. Cruyff formed the mythical "Dream Team" that won four consecutive Leagues (1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94) and achieved the first European Cup in the club's history in 1992 at Wembley.
His philosophy of "total football" and his commitment to the youth academy marked the way forward for subsequent generations, directly influencing the style of play that led Pep Guardiola, Xavi, Iniesta and Messi to glory.
Cruyff's legacy transcends the playing field through the Cruyff Foundation, an organisation that supports and develops sports projects for children and young people around the world.
Since 1995, the foundation has promoted physical activity, social integration and health, creating safe spaces such as Cruyff Courts and sports grounds where children can develop.
If you want to learn more about this admirable social work, The Sun Places recommends reading about the Cruyff Foundation: the legacy that transforms lives.
🌱 La Masia: the heart of FC Barcelona's philosophy
The success and identity of FC Barcelona cannot be understood without its youth academy, known worldwide as La Masia.
On 20 October 1979, this residence for young prospects was officially opened, located in the old farmhouse Can Planes, a country house built in 1702. Its philosophy is based on training children both sportingly and intellectually, instilling in them values such as respect, teamwork and positional play ('tiki-taka') that has transcended for decades.
La Masia has been praised since 2002 as one of the best sports schools in the world, and a spectacular fact confirms this: Barça's first team has had at least one player trained in the youth academy for 2,000 consecutive matches, spread over 35 years.
Although not all children who go through the youth system reside at La Masia, the club welcomes them with the same values. In addition to the original iconic building, which closed its doors in 2011, the academy is now based at the Joan Gamper sports city, officially named 'La Masia - Centre de formació Oriol Tort' in honour of the legendary talent scout.
The most recent generation of talents, such as Lamine Yamal, Gavi, Pedri, Cubarsí, Balde, Fermín López and Marc Casadó, form the backbone of Hansi Flick's team, proving that the talent factory is still fully active.
🏆The great myths and legends of FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona has had some of the best footballers in history. From the first idols such as Paulino Alcántara, through legends such as Ladislao Kubala, Luis Suárez (the Spanish one, Ballon d'Or winner in 1960) or Johan Cruyff himself.
Later came Diego Maradona, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Frank Rijkaard's 'Dream Team' or the golden generation of La Masia under the baton of Pep Guardiola.
But without a doubt the greatest exponent is Leo Messi, considered by many to be the best player of all time. The '10' won 35 titles and 7 Ballons d'Or, breaking all scoring records.
His career was a mirror in which other youth academy geniuses such as Andrés Iniesta and Xavi Hernández were reflected, the brain and heart of the best Barcelona in history.
Alongside them, defenders such as Carles Puyol or Gerard Piqué and goalkeepers such as Víctor Valdés or Ter Stegen have written golden pages of Barça history.
⚽️ Other elite sports sections at FC Barcelona

- The handball section is a true world power, accumulating continental and national titles
- Roller hockey is another of the most successful sections, while futsal has also achieved great success

- Athletics, rugby, field hockey and volleyball are other disciplines that represent the blue and maroon colours.
🖼️The FC Barcelona Museum: a journey through Barça history
The FC Barcelona Museum, known as the "Museu del Barça", is one of the most visited sports museums in the world, with more than 1.5 million visitors each year.
Located inside the Spotify Camp Nou, it opened its doors in 1984 and was completely renovated in 2010. Its permanent collection occupies more than 3,500 square metres and shows the evolution of the club from its foundation in 1899 to the present day.
The visit includes the trophy from the first Champions League won at Wembley (1992), the five European Cups, Messi's boots with which he scored his 91 goals in 2012, the ball from the historic 5-0 against Real Madrid in 1974 and personal objects of Johan Cruyff, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo and other legends.
You can also access the trophy room, the interactive "Barça Experience" space, the first team dressing room, the presidential box, the mixed zone and the dressing room tunnel, to feel like another player. The tour ends in the largest official shop in the world, where you can buy this season's shirt or a personalised souvenir.
For members and visitors, the Barça Tours also includes the possibility of going up to the third tier and enjoying a unique panorama of the pitch. Without a doubt, a must-see stop before or after the match.
