🖼️The Picasso Museum Barcelona: the temple of the Málaga-born genius in the heart of El Born

On Carrer de Montcada, in the heart of Barcelona's El Born district, stands a collection of majestic Gothic palaces that guard the greatest secret of 20th century art: more than 4,200 works by the most universal genius from Málaga.

The Picasso Museum Barcelona is much more than a modern art museum; it is the world reference centre for learning about the formative years of Pablo Ruiz Picasso and the only museum dedicated to the artist that was created during the painter's lifetime.

At The Sun Places we want to take you by the hand to discover this cathedral of art, from its hundred-year history to the most eagerly awaited exhibitions of 2026, and why staying with us is the best way to immerse yourself in the master's creative universe.

What is the history of the Picasso Museum Barcelona?

📜 The Picasso Museum Barcelona was inaugurated on 9 March 1963, becoming the first monographic museum dedicated to the painter in the world and the only one created during the artist's lifetime.

But its origins were forged years earlier, thanks to the deep friendship between Pablo Picasso and Jaime Sabartés, his personal secretary and great friend since youth. In the mid-1950s, Barcelona society promoted a citizen movement to create a museum that would house the works of the Málaga-born artist, who was already a living legend.

In 1959, Sabartés, with Picasso's consent, donated to Barcelona City Council the bulk of his personal collection of the painter's works, more than 570 pieces that would form the initial nucleus of the museum. The council acquired the Palacio de Berenguer de Aguilar (Carrer de Montcada, 15) to house the works, and the museum opened its doors under the name Museo Monográfico Pablo Ruiz Picasso.

In 1970, Picasso himself donated the complete series of Las Meninas, and in subsequent years legacies and donations arrived from his widow Jacqueline Roque and other collectors.

The museum was declared a museum of national interest by the Government of Catalonia and in 2026 it remains one of the most visited cultural centres in Barcelona. In 2025 alone, it received 1,021,500 visitors, making it the most visited municipal museum in the city.

Where is the Picasso Museum Barcelona located?

🏛️ The building: five Gothic palaces on Carrer de Montcada

  • One of the great attractions of The Picasso Museum Barcelona is undoubtedly its architecture. The museum occupies five large mansions or palaces on Carrer de Montcada, one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Barcelona. These palaces, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, are one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic civic architecture.

🏰The five palaces of the Picasso Museum Barcelona

Palacio Berenguer de Aguilar (Montcada, 15) - 1953 (original headquarters)

  • Bought by Berenguer de Aguilar in 1400. Houses the founding collections.

Palacio del Barón de Castellet (Montcada, 17)

  • 1970s - Extension to display the Las Meninas collection.

Palacio Meca (Montcada, 19)

  • 1980s - Space for temporary exhibitions.

Palacio Mauri (Montcada, 21)

  • 1990s - Extension of the museum route.

Palacio Finestres (Montcada, 23)

  • Early 2000s - Completes the block of museums.

The complex covers more than 13,000 square metres and constitutes one of the most important collections of medieval civic architecture in Barcelona.

What collection does the Picasso Museum Barcelona have?

🎨 The Picasso Museum Barcelona houses a collection of more than 4,200 works by the Málaga-born painter, the most complete in the world regarding his formative years and youth.

Unlike other great Picassian museums (such as the Musée Picasso Paris or the Museo Picasso Málaga), the Barcelona museum is distinguished by its chronological and biographical vocation: visitors can follow the artist's evolution step by step, from his earliest childhood drawings to his latest creations.

🖌️ The crown jewels: Picasso's Las Meninas

Undoubtedly, the most emblematic series of The Picasso Museum Barcelona is the set of 58 interpretations of Velázquez's Las Meninas, painted by Picasso in 1957. It is the only complete series by the artist that is preserved entirely together.

🎭 A genius's creative obsession

Between August and December 1957, Pablo Picasso shut himself away in his studio at the Villa La Californie in Cannes and executed 45 variations of Velázquez's masterpiece, together with 9 scenes of a dovecote, 3 landscapes and a portrait of Jacqueline.

These were not simple copies, but an exhaustive analysis, a reinterpretation and a radical deconstruction of the original painting, exploring the limits of composition, light, colour and perspective. The suite was donated by the painter himself to the Barcelona museum in May 1968, in memory of his great friend Jaime Sabartés, who died that same year.

The complete series is one of the museum's must-see attractions. Walking through the rooms dedicated to Las Meninas is to understand Picasso's creative mind at its peak and to witness a fascinating dialogue between two geniuses separated by three centuries. The main painting in the series, an oil measuring 194 x 260 cm, is one of the most outstanding works in the collection.

🖍️ Connection with the artist's life: the formative years

One of the unique features of The Picasso Museum Barcelona is its focus on the formative years of the Málaga-born painter.

Here you will find the most important collection of works by Picasso from his youth, when he studied at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and frequented Els Quatre Gats, the mythical modernist café in the old town.

Among the most outstanding pieces from this period are portraits of his father, José Ruiz Blasco, the first large-format oil painting attributed to him ("Science and Charity", currently at the MNAC, but studied at the Picasso) and the preparatory drawings for the Las Meninas series.

The museum also houses an important collection of ceramics and engravings from the later period, donated by Jacqueline Picasso in the 1980s. To complete the artistic experience, the oldest wing of the palaces offers a surprising museum of clothing and restored 14th-century furniture, which gives the tour a unique historical dimension.
