🎸Who was Manolo Sanlúcar? The genius of flamenco guitar
Manolo Sanlúcar, whose real name was Manuel Muñoz Alcón, was born on 24 November 1943 in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. He grew up in a flamenco environment thanks to his father, Isidro Muñoz, a great guitar enthusiast who received lessons from maestro Javier Molina and passed on all his knowledge to his children. He was one of the most important Spanish composers of recent times and, together with Paco de Lucía, Tomatito and Vicente Amigo, a key figure in the evolution of flamenco guitar.
Among his most acclaimed works are "Tauromagia" (1988), "Medea", "Soleá", "Locura de Brisa y Trino" (2000) and "Trebujena", some of which have travelled the world as ballets or have been performed by major symphony orchestras. His ambition was always to integrate flamenco into symphonic music, elevating it to a universal category. For this reason, he was awarded the National Music Prize in 2000 and received the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2014.
He died on 27 August 2022 in Jerez de la Frontera, leaving behind one of the most extensive musical and educational legacies of flamenco guitar.
History of Museo Sanlúcar in Sanlúcar de Barrameda
📜 The dream of a museum: the origin of the museum
The origin of Museo Sanlúcar in Sanlúcar de Barrameda goes back to the months before the master's death. Before he died, Manolo Sanlúcar entrusted his great friend José Martínez Talavera, president of Aura Seguros, with the important mission of creating a space that would preserve and disseminate his immense legacy for future generations. Thus, in November 2022, the Manolo Sanlúcar Aura Seguros Foundation was established, a non-profit organisation whose main objective is to promote and safeguard Andalusian culture through flamenco, with this museum as its nerve centre.
Museo Sanlúcar in Sanlúcar de Barrameda officially opened its doors on 8 June 2024 in the Palacio del Pueblo Andaluz, a historic building designed in 1907 by the Seville architect Aníbal González (author of the Plaza de España in Seville).
