📜History of the Upper District of Sanlúcar de Barrameda

The origin of the most Atlantic city

The Upper District of Sanlúcar de Barrameda is, above all, the cradle of the city. Located on a natural cliff, in the Middle Ages it constituted the original city. The slope of Cuesta de Belén marks a physical transition, but also a historical one: above remained the primitive, walled city between the 13th and 15th centuries, where palaces, churches, convents and merchants' houses were concentrated.

Although there has been settlement since prehistoric times, it was with the Reconquest that Sanlúcar became part of the kingdom of Seville. It was granted as a lordship to Guzmán el Bueno in the 13th century, becoming part of the enormous heritage of the House of Medina Sidonia. The Upper District of Sanlúcar de Barrameda was then the heart of the most powerful duchy in Andalusia for centuries.

⛵ Gateway to the Indies and cosmopolitan enclave

The Upper District of Sanlúcar de Barrameda gained enormous importance with trade with the Canary Islands and Africa in the 15th century. But it was in the 16th century when it reached its maximum splendour: Sanlúcar became the port of departure for the expedition of Magellan and Elcano in 1519. That feat changed world history, and the city filled with sailors, merchants, nobles and adventurers. The Upper District of Sanlúcar de Barrameda was then a strategic enclave in trade with the Indies, with a wall of which some remains are still preserved today, such as the Puerta de Rota.

Traders from all over Europe arrived in Sanlúcar attracted by its importance. In the Upper District of Sanlúcar de Barrameda we still find Bretones Street, which recalls those merchants who came from French Brittany. The entire city was the epicentre of commercial activity, and its upper district filled with luxurious palaces and homes of an aristocracy that lived with its back to the sea.

🏛️ The footprint of the dukes and the 19th century

The Upper District of Sanlúcar de Barrameda was for centuries the centre of power of the Medina Sidonia family. Their imposing ducal palace dominates the district from above. In the 19th century, a new character would mark the configuration of Sanlúcar: the Duke of Montpensier, a member of the French royal family, built a magnificent palace to escape the heat of Seville. His heirs bequeathed the building to the city, which today is the seat of the town hall and one of the greatest exponents of the splendour of the Upper District of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

🌟 Official recognition

The historical and monumental importance of the Upper District of Sanlúcar de Barrameda was officially recognised when the old town of Sanlúcar was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in the 1970s. Since then, its streets, squares and buildings have been protected for their exceptional heritage value.
