What is the history of Sotogrande, Luxury in Cádiz?
📜 History: the American dream that was born almost by chance
The history of Sotogrande began in 1962, when Filipino-American businessman and colonel Joseph Rafael McMicking dreamed of creating a Mediterranean paradise inspired by the luxury resorts of the United States and the Philippines. He acquired four country estates and their lands on the coast of San Roque, attracted by their views, the spaciousness of the land, the water reserves of the Guadiaro River and its proximity to Gibraltar airport.
The anecdote that triggered it all was almost fortuitous: an employee of McMicking, Fredy Melian, received a free plane ticket from Swissair and took the opportunity to tour the Spanish Mediterranean coast on a motorcycle in search of the perfect place.
The chosen one was the Paniagua estate, and in 1964 McMicking hired the best golf architect in the world, Robert Trent Jones, to design the first golf course, around which the development would grow. The first road opened would become the emblematic Paseo del Parque.
The visionary opted for the undergrounding of all conduits and designed the streets following the specifications of American highways. Quality was, from the beginning, the general tone.
