🎬 Some festivals are celebrated, but others are felt. The Seville European Film Festival 2026 belongs to the second category. This year, the event arrives in a solemn mood: the opening gala has been cancelled by the City Council as a mark of mourning for the train accident in Urda (Toledo).
But cinema does not stop. From today until 14 November, the city becomes a showcase for 190 titles, more than thirty world premieres and a historic commitment to Andalusian talent: 66 productions from the region, 21 of them world premieres.
At The Sun Places, where luxury is defined by authenticity and memorable experiences, we would like to invite you to discover the faces, the stories and the venues of an edition that, despite the circumstances, beats stronger than ever.
📅 When is the Seville European Film Festival 2026?
The festival runs from 6 to 14 November 2026. Activity kicks off this Friday at 9:00 with the first screenings at the various venues, and will continue for nine intense days of films, meetings and parallel activities.
📍 Where is the Seville European Film Festival 2026 held?
Screenings take place at eight venues across the city: Cartuja Center CITE, mk2 CineSur Nervión Plaza, Odeón Multicines, Unión Cine Ciudad, Teatro Alameda, Espacio Turina, CICUS and CaixaForum. This variety of venues makes it possible to combine the most independent cinema with major premieres and industry events.
🎥 An unusual opening: '¡Viva Carmen!' and the Honorary Giraldillo for Agnieszka Holland
Although there will be no gala, the programme keeps its key moments. The film chosen to open this edition is '¡Viva Carmen!' by the French director Sébastien Laudenbach, an animated reinterpretation of the Carmen myth set in 1840s Seville. The opening screening will be at the Cine Cervantes at 18:00.
The most moving moment of the day will come at 20:30 at the same cinema, when the Honorary Giraldillo is presented to the Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland, an award that goes ahead despite the cancellation of the gala and will take place just before the screening of 'I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming'. Holland, one of the most important voices in contemporary European cinema, thus receives the tribute of a city that is grieving this year but refuses to stop celebrating film.
🏆 The figures of a historic edition for Andalusian cinema
The Seville European Film Festival 2026 presents an ambitious programme combining international premieres, auteur cinema and an unprecedented Andalusian presence:
- 190 titles in total, with more than thirty world premieres and nearly a hundred Spanish premieres.
- 15 films in the Official Section competing for the Golden Giraldillo, with names such as Cristian Mungiu ('Fjord'), Paweł Pawlikowski ('Fatherland') and Lukas Dhont ('Coward').
- 66 Andalusian productions (37 feature films and 29 shorts), of which 21 are world premieres. It is a historic commitment to the region's cinema.
The most notable Andalusian titles include:
- 'Taranta' by Samuel Nacar: a documentary competing in the Official Section, set in Linares (Jaén), following four young people through the process of reindustrialisation after the reopening of the old Santana factory.
- 'Anguita. El hombre de los tres siglos' by Hugo Cabezas: a documentary about the Córdoba politician Julio Anguita, screened out of competition.
- 'Golpes' by Rafael Cobos: a directorial debut already recognised at the previous edition, confirming the talent of the Sevillian filmmaker.
The Panorama Andaluz section will feature titles such as 'Bajañí' by Fernando Trueba, 'Rito' by Emilio Belmonte, 'Bernabé, la sonrisa del flamenco' by Dany Ruz and 'Caballero Bonald, fragmentos de un navegante' by Paula Romero.
🎨 The 2026 poster: a tribute to 'Metropolis' and Almodóvar
This year's poster is by the Sevillian illustrator José Luis Ágreda. It pays tribute to 'Metropolis', Fritz Lang's classic, through a design inspired by the poster for Seville's 1930 Spring Festival by Juan Dapena. It features Antonio Banderas holding a Giralda dressed in a flamenco dress, a clear nod to Pedro Almodóvar and his film '¡Átame!' (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!).
