The Mercado de la Lonja del Barranco, located at the foot of the Triana bridge with the Guadalquivir River as its main witness, is much more than a place to eat.

With more than 1,300,000 visitors per year, it is one of the busiest meeting points in Seville, on a par with the Cathedral or the Alcázar.

Its original name, "Lonja del Barranco", evokes its past, and its present is that of a reference leisure and gastronomy centre where locals, tourists and personalities such as journalist Carlos Herrera or bullfighter Juan Echanove gather.

📜  The History of the Lonja del Barranco: From fish market to gastronomic temple

The history of this building is, in itself, fascinating. Its origin dates back to 1854, when the Mareantes guild (fishermen from Ayamonte) requested a space from the City Council for the sale and contracting of fish.

The answer came in 1883 with the inauguration of the so-called Lonja del Barranco, a huge open-plan nave of about 700 square metres.

From then until 1970, it functioned as a Fish Market and Wholesale Market, being the only iron market in Seville that has survived to the present day.

Due to its architecture, for decades its design was attributed to Gustave Eiffel, the engineer of the famous Parisian tower. Although it is now known that there are no documents to prove it conclusively, its style and construction dates keep this legend alive.

After decades of abandonment and some temporary uses, the building underwent a deep renovation and reopened its doors in November 2014 with its new concept: an avant-garde gastronomic market.

The concession was granted to the company Lonja del Barranco, in which journalist Carlos Herrera and bullfighter Fran Rivera participate, for a period of 25 years in exchange for an annual fee of 230,000 euros.
