We also explain why staying with us is the best way to experience the magic of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona first-hand.
⏳What is the history of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona?
The history of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona dates back to 1837, when Manuel Gisbert promoted the creation of the Amateur Dramatic Society in the old Montsió Convent, located on La Rambla. What began as a small concert hall with 600 seats grew rapidly under the impulse of the Catalan bourgeoisie, who saw in this initiative the opportunity to provide Barcelona with a lyrical theatre on a par with the great European capitals.
In 1845 the first stone of the new building was laid on a site that had been the old Trinitarian convent. The design was by the architect Miquel Garriga i Roca, who proposed a majestic horseshoe-shaped hall with a capacity for 3,500 seated people and more than 1,000 standing, making it the largest theatre of its time, surpassed only by the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. Funding was made possible by the sale of boxes and privileged seats, which gave rise to the Gran Teatre del Liceu Society, known as the Society of Owners.
Finally, on Sunday 4 April 1847, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona opened its doors for the first time, immediately becoming the centre of the city's cultural and social life. The most important artists of each era in the fields of opera, bel canto and dance have passed through its stage.
What is the architecture of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona?
🎨 Architecture and splendour: the magical hall that makes it one of the largest in Europe
When you enter the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, you realise you are in a sacred space. Its famous horseshoe-shaped hall, designed by Miquel Garriga i Roca (1847), is one of the largest in Europe and a true work of art. After the fire of 1861, Josep Oriol Mestres took over in 1862 and managed to restore the Liceu to its former splendour.
When you enter through the main door on La Rambla, you reach the Hall of Mirrors, also known as The Foyer, a room of enormous historical value because it is one of only two places that have survived the two great fires of the building.
The current capacity of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona is 2,292 seats. But the real magic is in the small details: every box, every moulding and every corner is designed to make the experience unique.
🔥The curse of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona: fires and a brutal attack
The history of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona is marked by a series of tragic events that many attribute to a curse. Decades before the theatre was built, the convent of the discalced Trinitarians and the original small concert hall had already burned down. But the worst was yet to come.
🔥 The 1861 fire
On the night of 9 April 1861, in the midst of Carnival festivities, a fire started in the theatre's tailor's shop and completely destroyed the hall and stage. The city was shocked. Legend has it that among the rubble a mysterious paper was found on which was written: "I am an owl and I go alone; if you raise it again, I will burn it again." But the Barcelona bourgeoisie did not give up. On 20 April 1862 the theatre reopened its doors.
💣 The anarchist attack of 1893
On 7 November 1893, during a performance of Rossini's William Tell, the anarchist Santiago Salvador threw two bombs from the stalls. One of them exploded and caused at least 20 deaths. The attack left an indelible mark on the city's memory.
🔥 The 1994 fire
On 31 January 1994, during maintenance work, a spark reached the stage curtain and the entire theatre burned to the ground. Everyone remembers the image of soprano Montserrat Caballé crying as she watched her "second home" burn to the ground. Once again, the curse seemed to have been fulfilled.
🏗️ The reconstruction: the phoenix reborn from the ashes
- But Barcelona rose again. That same year, the city, its institutions and thousands of citizens came together in a "collective hug" and the Gran Teatre del Liceu Foundation was created to coordinate the reconstruction. The project was commissioned to the architect Ignasi de Solà-Morales and incorporated important innovations.
- The new Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona was designed to be safer, technically advanced and larger. The built area tripled, from 12,000 to 36,000 square metres. The original design of the hall and the classic façade of La Rambla were respected, but access was widened.
- In addition, a large water tank was installed in the basement to prevent fires. Finally, on 7 October 1999, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona reopened its doors, more beautiful and majestic than ever.
🎤Great artists who made history at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona
Since its opening in 1847, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona has been the stage where the most prodigious voices in the world have made Barcelona vibrate. Immortal legends such as Enrico Caruso, Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti have paraded through its horseshoe-shaped hall.
Also Victoria de los Ángeles, Renata Tebaldi, Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson, figures who turned every performance into a unique event. In more recent years, names such as José Carreras, Montserrat Caballé, Leyla Gencer and Plácido Domingo have continued to weave the legend that surrounds the Liceu.
But if there is one name that represents the soul of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, it is Montserrat Caballé. The Barcelona-born soprano, who died in 2018, maintained a symbiotic relationship with the theatre: she made her debut in 1962 and throughout her career sang more than 80 performances on its stage. Her image crying before the ruins of the 1994 fire became the symbol of an entire city's pain.
Other great names that have passed through the Liceu include Marilyn Horne, Alfredo Kraus, Jaume Aragall, Giacomo Aragall, Elena Obraztsova, Raina Kabaivanska and Carlo Bergonzi. They all left an indelible mark on the memory of the Barcelona public.

🥂The Liceu Circle: the private club and the exclusive restaurant
But the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona is not just opera. Inside, and with a parallel history, is the Liceu Circle, an English-style private club founded in 1847, the same year the theatre opened.
This exclusive club, which has nearly a thousand members, has traditionally been the meeting point for Barcelona's high bourgeoisie and the most select opera lovers.
The Liceu Circle occupies independent spaces within the building and has:
- Restored modernist lounges with period furniture.
- A private art collection with works by Catalan artists.
- A library specialising in music and opera.
- A terrace and a restaurant for the exclusive use of its members throughout the year, where you can have dinner or a drink before and after performances, in a reserved luxury atmosphere.
- The Liceu Circle restaurant offers avant-garde cuisine based on local seasonal produce, with menus that change each season to match the performances. It is not possible for the general public to access, but The Sun Places, thanks to its network of contacts and its advanced concierge service, can manage invitations or recommendations for those guests who wish to enjoy this exclusive experience.
- Clarification: The restaurant La Llotja that sometimes appears in searches is located in the El Nacional gastronomic centre (Passeig de Gràcia) and has no connection with the Liceu Circle or the theatre.
