Barcelona, World Capital of Architecture 2026

🏗️ Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026: the city that builds the future

Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 is much more than an honorary title. It is recognition of a city that has managed to turn urban planning, design and architecture into its own hallmarks. At The Sun Places we want to tell you everything about this cultural milestone, from when it was announced to what it represents for the city, its modernist architects and, of course, for you who choose to stay with us.

📜What is and when was Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 announced?

The appointment of Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 was made official on 4 July 2023 during the XXVIII UIA World Congress of Architects in Copenhagen. It was UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay who announced the designation, following the recommendation of the UNESCO-UIA Joint Committee, chaired by architect Dominique Perrault.

The World Capital of Architecture initiative is a triennial programme launched in 2018 by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA), whereby the host city of the World Congress of Architects is designated World Capital of Architecture for one year.

Thus, Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 follows in the footsteps of Rio de Janeiro (2020) and Copenhagen (2023). The motto for this year is "Becoming. Architectures for a planet in transition", an invitation to rethink the role of architecture in the face of global challenges.

🏛️Who organises and decides that Barcelona is World Capital of Architecture 2026?

The title of Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 is awarded jointly by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA).

The designation fell on Barcelona because the city was chosen to host the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026, which will take place from 28 June to 2 July at the Gran Via venue of Fira de Barcelona. With this congress, Barcelona will become the only city to host the event for the second time, after having organised it in 1996.

Local organisation falls to Barcelona City Council together with the support of the Government of Catalonia and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda. The detailed programming has been led by Maria Buhigas, current architect of Barcelona City Council, with extensive collaboration from more than 170 entities, from architecture schools to neighbourhood organisations.

🗓️What does the programme of Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 consist of?

The bulk of Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 takes place between 12 February and 13 December 2026, accumulating more than 1,500 activities spread across the city's ten districts. These include:

  • 143 exhibitions
  • More than 500 routes and guided tours
  • 300 debates and conferences
  • 140 workshops
  • 60 activities linking architecture with film, dance and music

A stamp programme invites citizens to explore the city, getting a stamp for each district visited in any of the official activities.

💡What does Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 represent for the city?

For Barcelona, Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 is an opportunity to:

  • Project itself internationally as an urban laboratory for sustainable architecture, addressing challenges such as the housing crisis and climate change.
  • Put architecture at the service of citizens, as a public policy subject to public criticism.
  • Discover the city "with new perspectives", with 46,000 people already participating in the first months.
  • Leave a tangible legacy, such as the conversion of ten blind walls into living green façades, chosen through an international competition for young architects.
  • Mayor Jaume Collboni stresses the need for a habitable, inclusive and resilient city, recalling that architecture and urban planning have historically been transformative tools.

🎨 What it represents for modernist architects that Barcelona is World Capital of Architecture 2026

The modernist legacy is one of the great protagonists of this appointment. Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 coincides with two key anniversaries: the centenary of Antoni Gaudí (10 June 1926) and the 150th anniversary of Ildefons Cerdà (father of the Eixample Plan).

The title itself amplifies Gaudí Year 2026, projecting Catalan modernism into the global architectural debate. The city that knew the great names of modernism (Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch) can now show how those ideas are still valid in the most contemporary architecture.

At the opening ceremony on 13 April, the unknown architect Ildefons Cerdà was vindicated alongside the genius of Antoni Gaudí, key figures of Barcelona urban planning. Furthermore, eight World Heritage buildings illuminated their façades in blue from 6 to 8 February to celebrate this appointment, including the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera and Park Güell.
