🍖 This gastronomic route, organised by the Zahara Merchants' Association (ACOZA), pays tribute to retinto beef, an indigenous breed from the south-western Iberian Peninsula that grazes freely between the dehesa and the scrubland of the Sierra del Retín. A product that, like red tuna from the almadraba, has become a hallmark of this Magical Village of Spain.
At The Sun Places we want you to discover this unique gastronomic experience. That's why we invite you to discover the secrets of the 13th edition of this route, its participating establishments and the flavour of a product that is landscape, identity and culture, staying in our Luxury Apartments in Cádiz.
✨ Zahara de los Atunes is not only synonymous with almadraba tuna. This corner of the Costa de la Luz, which lives between endless beaches and Cádiz dehesas, has turned retinto beef into the protagonist of one of its most flavourful festivals. As the organisers rightly say, "there are flavours that leave their mark". And this route is proof that gastronomy can be a journey to the heart of Andalusia.
📅 When is the 13th Retinto Route celebrated?
The 13th Retinto Route will take place from 7 to 12 October 2026, coinciding with the Pilar long weekend. Six intense days in which Zahara de los Atunes becomes the showcase for retinto beef, with bars and restaurants competing to offer the most creative and tasty tapas.
The route has become an essential date in the province's gastronomic calendar, attracting visitors from all over Spain who come to discover the authentic flavours of Cádiz. October, with its mild temperatures and sunny days, is the perfect time to enjoy this event and the wild beaches of Zahara.
The route's format is simple and accessible to everyone: participating establishments offer tapas or dishes made with retinto beef at popular prices, and visitors can vote for their favourites. A competition that adds an extra incentive to the experience, although what really attracts is the atmosphere: full terraces, lively conversations and the whole village turned into a gastronomic festival.
🐄 Retinto Beef: Flavour, Tradition and Territory
To speak of Retinto Beef is to speak of landscape, identity and culture. Raised in an extensive system, this rustic breed grazes freely among meadows and Atlantic breezes, contributing to the conservation of dehesa ecosystems and the rural fabric of the La Janda region.
What makes this meat so special? Its intense flavour and juicy texture, the result of free-range rearing and natural feeding. The retinto cow, with its mahogany or reddish coat, adapts to dry and harsh climates, and is raised in large areas of the Sierra del Retín, in Barbate, where it can be seen grazing near the cliffs or next to the shore on the most virgin beaches.
The census of this native breed exceeds 20,700 specimens in Spain, with more than 1,200 livestock farms dedicated to its exploitation. A quality product, with a certification of origin, that is enjoyed as a T-bone steak, sirloin, burgers or in more innovative preparations, such as tatakis, carpaccios or fusion baos.
🍽️ How does the Retinto Route work?
Enjoying this event is as simple as it is appetising. During the six days of the event, participating establishments offer tapas or special dishes made with retinto beef, at prices around €5 with a drink or €4 without
Visitors purchase a "tapaporte" that guides them through the different venues, and can vote for their favourites in different categories: best dish, best service and favourite restaurant. A professional jury also evaluates the proposals, adding a competitive element that raises the quality of the culinary creations.
In previous editions, more than 20 restaurants and bars have participated, offering a wide variety of proposals ranging from traditional stews to the most avant-garde preparations. The route thus becomes a gastronomic journey that invites you to discover Zahara de los Atunes through its flavours.
📍 Beyond the Route: Zahara de los Atunes
Zahara de los Atunes, part of the Magical Villages of Spain network, offers visitors much more than a gastronomic route. Its endless beaches, coastal dunes and natural surroundings, with the Cachón River as one of its treasures, make this corner of Cádiz a dream destination.
The historic centre, linked to the town's tuna-fishing past, has landmarks such as the Iglesia del Carmen and the Palacio de las Pilas. The Market, known as the Sistine Chapel of Tuna, is another must-see stop, with its decorative paintings of marine species.
Nearby, the Camarinal lighthouse and the Playa de los Alemanes offer unforgettable views, while the sunsets over the Atlantic make every day an unforgettable memory. Zahara de los Atunes is a place where the sea and the dehesa converse on the same plate.
