The Arab Baths of Córdoba are much more than a simple wellness centre: they are a journey to the time of maximum splendour of Al-Ándalus, when the city was home to nearly six hundred hammams that combined hygiene, spiritual purification and social gathering.
Today, these baths have re-emerged as spaces for relaxation and culture, allowing locals and visitors alike to enjoy a millenary ritual in the heart of the city. At The Sun Places, we invite you to discover their history and the best centres to live this experience.
📍Where are the Arab Baths of Córdoba located?
The Arab Baths of Córdoba are distributed throughout the historic centre, mainly in the Jewish Quarter (Judería) and its surroundings. The most important archaeological remains are in the Campo Santo de los Mártires (Caliphal Baths) and on Calle Velázquez Bosco (Santa María Baths).
The active centres for enjoying the hammam are also concentrated in the Jewish Quarter, just a few steps from the Calleja de las Flores, the Mosque-Cathedral and the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs.
📜 History of the Arab Baths of Córdoba: from the caliphs to the present day
The history of the Arab Baths of Córdoba dates back to the Roman era, predecessor of the Islamic hammam. The Romans introduced the hypocaust system (underfloor heating) and the structure of cold, warm and hot rooms, which the Arabs adopted and perfected.
During the Caliphate of Córdoba (10th-11th centuries), the city reached its maximum splendour and had hundreds of public baths that fulfilled hygienic, social and religious functions, as purification was mandatory before prayer.
Caliph Alhakén II (r. 961-976) ordered the construction of the lavish Caliphal Baths next to the Andalusian Alcázar, which were the most important in the city and the scene of historical episodes such as the regicide of caliphs Alí ben Hamud (1018) and Abderramán V (1024). After the Castilian conquest of 1236, many baths were converted or fell into disuse.
The Caliphal Baths were buried in 1328 by order of Alfonso XI, who created a square known as the "campillo del rey" in its place, now the Campo Santo de los Mártires. They were accidentally rediscovered in 1903 and excavated between 1961 and 1964. Since 2006 they have been open to the public as a museum.
The Santa María Baths, meanwhile, date from the 11th century and were rebuilt in the 14th century by Mudéjar master builders, being declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2001.
🏛️ The Arab Baths of Córdoba as a museum: Caliphal Baths and Santa María Baths
If you are interested in the cultural side of the Arab Baths of Córdoba, you cannot miss these two historical sites that function as museums:
- Caliphal Alcázar Baths: Built in the 10th century by Alhakén II, they were part of the disappeared Umayyad Alcázar. The visit goes through the changing room, cold, warm and hot rooms, with their characteristic skylight vaults in the shape of an eight-pointed star. Original ceramic pipes and explanatory panels are on display. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1985 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
- Santa María Arab Baths: Built in the Caliphal period (11th century) and rebuilt in the 14th, they preserve three vaulted rooms and a cistern. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest on 30 April 2001. After various vicissitudes, they were acquired by a private individual and since 2021 have been managed by the Doble de Cepa group, offering daytime tourist visits and gastronomic and flamenco experiences at night. Located at Calle Velázquez Bosco 8-10, next to the Mosque.
🛁 Where to enjoy the hammam in the active Arab Baths of Córdoba?
To live the sensory experience of the Arab Baths of Córdoba, these are the most recommended active centres. The hammam ritual consists of a 2-hour thermal bath circuit that alternates three pools at different temperatures: cold (16°C), warm and hot (39°C).
The heat opens the pores and relaxes the muscles, while the cold tones and activates circulation. You can add massages with essential oils, exfoliations with black soap and a kessa glove, or treatments with hot basalt stones.
- Arab Baths of Córdoba (Calle Almanzor 18): The largest in Spain, with more than 500 m² built on the remains of 1st-century Roman thermal baths and 15th-century public baths.
- Hammam Al Ándalus Córdoba: Next to the Mosque-Cathedral, it stands out for its careful reconstruction of traditional architectural elements, Caliphal arches, soft lighting and Andalusian music. It offers thermal baths, massages with essential oils, exfoliations and beauty rituals.
