🕍 The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba: a labyrinth of flowers, history and three cultures
In the monumental heart of Córdoba, guarded by the majestic Mosque-Cathedral, lies The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba, a labyrinth of whitewashed alleyways, flower-filled patios and centuries of shared history.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, this former Jewish quarter is one of the most charming corners of Andalusia. At The Sun Places we invite you to get lost in its streets and discover why it remains the most authentic soul of the Cordoban capital.
📍Where is the Jewish Quarter of Córdoba?
The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba is located in the historic centre of the city, between the Almodóvar Gate and the Mosque-Cathedral. Its traditional boundaries include streets such as Judíos, Averroes, Manríquez, Almanzor, Romero and Deanes, as well as the squares of Maimonides, Tiberiades and Judá Leví. It is the patrimonial epicentre of Córdoba, surrounded by unique monuments such as the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs and the Archaeological Museum.
📜History of the Jewish Quarter of Córdoba
The Jewish presence in Córdoba dates back to Roman times, specifically to 169 BC, when they arrived with the foundation of the city.
During the Caliphate of Córdoba, the Hebrew community lived its golden age under the protection of figures such as Hasday ibn Shaprut, a physician, diplomat and leader of all the Jewish communities of the caliphate, who turned Córdoba into a beacon of Sephardic thought.
However, it was not until the Christian conquest of Ferdinand III the Saint in 1236 that the Jews finally settled in the neighbourhood we know today, under a charter that equalised their rights.
The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba flourished during the 13th and 14th centuries, until the tragic Edict of Granada of 1492, when the Catholic Monarchs decreed the expulsion of the Jews, putting an end to centuries of coexistence.

🏛️Essential monuments of the Jewish Quarter of Córdoba
The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba is an open-air museum. Among its most emblematic corners are:
- Synagogue of Córdoba (Calle Judíos, 20). Built between 1314 and 1315 by the architect Isaac Moheb, it is the only medieval synagogue preserved in Andalusia and one of three in all of Spain along with those in Toledo. Its walls, full of Hebrew inscriptions, were rediscovered in 1884 after a storm.
- Casa de Sefarad (Museum of Sephardic Culture). Right in front of the Synagogue, this 14th-century house houses a centre dedicated to the dissemination of the Jewish legacy, with rooms covering the role of women, the Inquisition or Sephardic music.
- Flower Alley. The most photographed street in Córdoba, where the white of the walls and the pots of geraniums frame the tower of the Mosque-Cathedral in the distance.
- Almodóvar Gate. One of the three medieval gates preserved in Córdoba, built in the Almohad period and restored in the 14th century. It is the main entrance to the neighbourhood and an excellent starting point for the visit.
- Mudéjar Chapel of San Bartolomé. A small jewel from the 14th century located next to the old Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, with impressive Mudéjar plasterwork blending Christian, Islamic and Jewish influences.
- Municipal Craft Souk. Located in an old commercial souk, it houses small workshops where local craftsmen work with leather, ceramics and silverware. Ideal for buying unique souvenirs.
- Bullfighting Museum of Córdoba. Located in Plaza de Maimónides, it gathers the history of Cordoban bullfighting with pieces from great figures such as Manolete and El Cordobés.
🍽️Luxury gastronomy and traditional taverns
The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba is also a gastronomic reference point. Here you can taste everything from haute cuisine with three Repsol Suns to century-old recipes in taverns with a long history:
- Restaurante Noor (3 Repsol Suns). Chef Paco Morales (three Michelin stars) leads this gastronomic temple that recreates the cuisine of Al-Ándalus from the 10th to the 13th century. An unparalleled historical and sensory journey.
- Restaurante Noor by Paco Morales was the first Cordoban to achieve the third Michelin Star, consolidating Córdoba as a world gastronomic destination.
- Casa Pepe de la Judería (1 Repsol Sun and recommended by the Michelin Guide). Authentic Cordoban institution located at Calle Romero, 1. Founded in 1994, it occupies an old house in the neighbourhood and is famous for its oxtail and its Cordoban Salmorejo. It is considered a Historic Tavern of Córdoba.
- El Churrasco. Open since 1970 in a 14th-century house, it specialises in Iberian pork roasted over holm oak charcoal, with a dreamy interior patio.
- Taberna Salinas. Founded in 1924 (with origins in a tavern from 1879), it is one of the most emblematic century-old taverns in Córdoba. Figures such as Ava Gardner and Pío Baroja have sat at its tables. A must-visit to try its "picás" oranges with cod or its chickpea stew.
- Bodegas Campos. Historic Cordoban tavern par excellence, located on Calle Lineros, next to the city wall. Famous for its Montilla-Moriles wines and traditional Andalusian cuisine.
- Casa Rubio. Located at the Almodóvar Gate, it shares owners with Casa Pepe de la Judería and is another classic where you can taste flamenquines and salmorejo.
🕍Maimonides Square and the Sephardic legacy
In the heart of the neighbourhood, Maimonides Square (formerly Plaza de los Armentas) pays tribute to the great philosopher, astronomer and physician Moses ben Maimon, known as Maimonides, born in Córdoba in 1135.
His bronze statue, the work of sculptor Amadeo Ruiz Olmos, presides over the square and it is traditional to touch the figure's right foot to ask for wisdom and good fortune in studies. He was one of the most influential thinkers of medieval Judaism, and his legacy still vibrates in every corner of the neighbourhood.

🔍Comparison: The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba vs other Jewish quarters in Spain
Although Spain preserves other notable historic Jewish quarters, The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba stands out for its monumental integration and authenticity:
- Toledo's Jewish Quarter: Very touristy and extensive, it preserves two synagogues (Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito) and a well-preserved quarter, but less integrated with the monumental landscape of a single great mosque.
- Seville's Jewish Quarter: Located in the Santa Cruz neighbourhood, it is charming but lacks a preserved synagogue (they were converted into churches). Its layout is smaller and more dispersed.
- The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba: UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the only medieval synagogue in Andalusia, steps away from the Mosque-Cathedral and the Alcázar. The most photographed, most visited and with the highest concentration of unique monuments in southern Europe.
