At THE SUN PLACES, we invite you to discover one of Spain's most authentic, intelligent, and vibrant festivals: the Carnival of Cádiz.
The Carnival of Cádiz was recognized in 1980, along with the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as a Festival of International Tourist Interest and declared a Treasure of Spain's Intangible Cultural Heritage. In 2019, it was registered in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage (CGPHA) as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).
Their parodies of current events make them unique, and all the troupes work hard throughout the year to come up with themes related to politics or sports, giving a humorous twist to what's happening in our daily lives. And the best way to experience it is from the comfort and exclusivity of our Luxury Tourist Apartments in Cádiz.
What is the history the Carnival of Cádiz?
🎭 The Voice of the People.
The origins of Carnival can be traced back to various civilizations, according to scholars, recalling the Saturnalia (to the god Saturn) and the Lupercalia (to the god Pan), celebrations known in both ancient Greece and classical Rome. But it is with Christianity that it reaches its greatest splendor, and without the idea of Lent, it would not exist in the form it has had since the dark ages of the European Middle Ages.
Its roots go back to the 16th century, with Italian influences, but its current form emerged in the 19th century as a critical, transgressive, and popular festival. After being banned during the Franco dictatorship for its satirical content, it resurfaced with force with the return of democracy, establishing itself as a space for freedom of expression where, through humor and music, politicians, celebrities, and current events are cleverly criticized. It's the most literary and cerebral carnival in the world.
📅When is the Carnival of Cádiz Celebrated?
The Carnaval of Cádiz has variable dates, as it depends on the liturgical calendar. It's usually celebrated between February and March, reaching its peak in the 10 days before Ash Wednesday. The official competitions at the Gran Teatro Falla begin a few weeks earlier, but the street party floods the city during the main weekend and the following one ("the piñata weekend").

- Choruses: Large groups (up to 45 people) on floats. Traditional and nostalgic repertoire.
