Enjoy the Seville April Fair

The Seville April Fair is not just a party; it is the ultimate expression of Sevillian joy, heritage, and identity, a unique event in the world that completely transforms the city for seven unforgettable days.

What is the Origin and History of the Seville April Fair?

From Livestock Fair to Universal Celebration.

Its history begins in a unique way. On August 25, 1846, two Seville city councilors, José María Ybarra and Narciso Bonaplata, proposed creating an annual livestock fair. Queen Isabella II granted permission, and the first fair was held in April 1847 in the Prado de San Sebastián.

Over the years, the commercial aspect gradually gave way to the recreational one. Families began setting up awnings and tents to rest and share food, the origins of the current casetas (tents). The move in 1973 to the current fairgrounds in Los Remedios marked its definitive transformation into the elegant and popular mega-festival it is today: an ephemeral city of more than 1,000 casetas that springs up every spring.

What is a Caseta at the Seville April Fair?

The Heart of the Festival. A caseta is the private living room of the Seville April Fair. These are temporary structures made of striped canvas (white and green, the city's colors) or other colors, which are assembled and disassembled each year. Inside, a microcosm of Andalusian hospitality is created:

  • Decoration: Paper lanterns, Manila shawls, typical household items, and pots of geraniums.
  • Function: They are spaces for receiving guests, eating, dancing, and toasting. There are two main types:
  • Private booths: Belonging to families, clubs, associations, or companies. Access is by invitation only.
  • Public booths: Municipal and district booths, open to everyone.
  • The soul of the booth is the "alumbrao" (lighting of the entrance), the Sevillanas music playing nonstop, the smell of fried fish and manzanilla sherry, and the coming and going of people in flamenco dresses and short dresses.

Most booths are privately owned, managed by groups of friends, families, or organizations. Access is usually restricted to members and their guests, and it is not common to admit new members. These groups maintain a relationship that transcends the fairgrounds themselves, establishing themselves as lasting social circles.

When is the Seville April Fair?

A Mobile Rendezvous with Spring. The Seville April Fair doesn't have a fixed date. It's celebrated two weeks after Easter Sunday (the end of Holy Week). It usually takes place between mid- and late April, and lasts for seven days (from one Saturday to the next), with this unchangeable ritual:

  • Saturday: "The Lighting Test" (test lighting at midday) and the official "Lighting" at midnight, with the illumination of more than 500,000 light bulbs on the main entrance (different each year) and throughout the fairgrounds.
  • Sunday to Thursday: Fair days with horse and carriage rides in the morning/afternoon, and parties in the casetas (tents) day and night.
  • Friday: Last day of the fair.
  • Saturday: Night of the "Fried fish" and closing fireworks at midnight.

The Seville April Fair schedule, although subject to public debate, maintains its traditional structure. However, an adjustment to its duration may be considered in the future, given the extraordinary transformation the city undergoes during these days in all areas: from urban mobility to the massive influx of visitors.

One of the most anticipated moments of the year in Seville is the official presentation of the April Fair poster. This act symbolically marks the starting point of the countdown to the most festive and eagerly awaited week for the people of Seville, awakening excitement and anticipating the explosion of light, color, and tradition that is to come.

What to Do and See at the Seville April Fair?

During the Day (From 12:00 to 20:00 approximately):

  • Horse and Carriage Parade: The fairgrounds transform into a vibrant procession of riders in traditional dress or flamenco attire, and decorated horse-drawn carriages. It's a unique spectacle of elegance and tradition.
  • Lunch in the Casetas: Lunchtime (around 14:00-16:00) is sacred. It's time for fried fish and rebujito (a mix of chamomile tea and Sprite/7UP).
  • Visit Public Booths: Explore the fairgrounds and enter the municipal booths to experience the atmosphere, dance Sevillanas, and have a drink.

At Night (From the "lighting" until dawn):

  • The "Lighting": Don't miss the inaugural lighting ceremony on Saturday. A magical moment when everything is illuminated.
  • Party in the Booths: The music, dancing, and festivities intensify. It's time for Sevillanas dancing and socializing.
  • Atmosphere in the streets of the fairgrounds: Crowds of people strolling in their finest attire, in a festive and safe atmosphere.
  • The Seville April Fair is, in itself, a living tribute to flamenco. It embodies the joy, the soul, and the passion of this inherited art, which is breathed in every Sevillana, every guitar, and every "olé." Beyond the fairgrounds, the essence of flamenco pulsates in the numerous Flamenco Tablaos of Seville, temples where you can enjoy top-notch shows accompanied by a drink and a tapa, for an unforgettable evening.

One of the most exclusive and traditional events of The Seville April Fair is the solemn and stately procession from the fairgrounds to The Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza. This ritual, which blends festivities with bullfighting, involves riders—both male and female—and their carriages, dressed in their finest attire, whether short jackets or flamenco dresses, leaving the fairgrounds and riding through the streets of Seville to the Maestranza, the cathedral of bullfighting, to attend the afternoon's bullfight.
