Discover Bodegas Barrero, Manzanilla Gabriela

🍷 At The Sun Places, luxury is also found in tradition and know-how passed down from generation to generation. That's why we invite you to discover Bodegas Barrero and its Manzanilla Gabriela, a unique wine that ages under the veil of flor thanks to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. This firm, with more than two centuries of history, is the best exponent of the authenticity of the city's wines. With The Sun Places, we want this experience to be part of your luxury stay, offering you the chance to tour its century-old wine cellars and taste its most exclusive wines.

Sanlúcar de Barrameda is one of the most authentic destinations on the Andalusian coast, and its international fame is due not only to its beaches or gastronomy, but to a star product: manzanilla. Among the wineries that keep this tradition alive, Bodegas Barrero stands as a must-stop for lovers of good wine and for those travellers seeking genuine experiences. Planning a wine route through Sanlúcar is synonymous with immersing yourself in history, and doing so with the comfort of our Apartments turns the getaway into an unforgettable luxury plan.

History of Bodegas Barrero: more than two centuries of tradition in the Barrio Bajo

The history of this house goes back to 1798, when the Marquis of Casa Arizón sold the "San Pedro" winery to the Vicario Iñigo family. This is the first document we find of the winery, which indicates that its origins predate that date. In 1986, the Barrero family took over the firm, buying it from the heirs of Miguel Sánchez Ayala. The first turning point came with the incorporation of the current manager, José Luis Barrero Pérez, who drove the expansion of the winery. The second key point was the purchase, in 2019, of the two wine cellars on Calle Trasbolsa from the historic firm Pedro Romero, S.A. Today, the winery has more than 8,300 square metres of wine buildings in the heart of the city's Barrio Bajo.

The quality of its wines has its origin in the must from the 110 hectares of its own vineyards in Pago Balbaína Alta, considered one of the best in the Marco de Jerez. The albariza soils and the microclimate of the area, with high humidity and the west wind, create the perfect conditions for biological ageing under the veil of flor.

The Manzanilla Gabriela and its different expressions

Gabriela is the flagship of the winery, a wine that is aged for 6 years in the traditional system of clases and solera. Delicate, saline, iodised and mineral, it is an example of the classicism of this type of wine that looks towards the mouth of the Guadalquivir. But the winery also offers other expressions of this manzanilla:

  • Manzanilla Gabriela en Rama: A classic manzanilla, an exponent of the highest quality of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Saline and iodised, with a surprising mineral delicacy. On the palate it is persistent and enormously versatile for pairing. Its aroma is pungent, but it stands out especially for a dry finish, a refreshing intensity and that spark of light acidity that makes it irresistible. A wine born from the Palomino Fino varieties grown in our vineyards of Las Cañas and La Soledad, in the heart of the Pago de Balbaína Alta
  • Manzanilla Gabriela Única en Rama Magnum: Bottled directly from the cask, unfiltered, maintaining all its intensity and purity. It is important to keep the bottle upright so that the veil of flor can develop
  • Manzanilla Gabriela Oro en Rama: A manzanilla pasada with more than 10 years of age. It is bottled in seasonal sacas, only 4 per year, respecting the natural cycles. It is an oenological jewel with saline notes, touches of dried fruits and memories of flor yeast
  • Manzanilla Pipiola: Another of the winery's brands, a fine and elegant manzanilla that completes its wide range of wines

In addition to these manzanillas, the winery produces other fortified wines such as Oloroso Galeón VORS, amontillados and vermouths.

The new wine tourism space of Bodegas Barrero

In 2023, the firm inaugurated a new wine tourism space in its wineries on Calle Trasbolsa, 84. This space, which was the old wine dispatch of Pedro Romero, has been refurbished to offer a complete experience. You can buy wine in bulk, enjoy a glass of manzanilla  in a courtyard with Sevillian tables, and accompany it with a selection of cold tapas: ham, sausages and cheeses. The tapas area and the wine dispatch open from ten in the morning to four in the afternoon.

In addition, the winery offers guided tours with a tasting of its wines. The tours are by prior appointment and take place in the wine cellar on Calle Trasbolsa. During the tour, you can taste up to 4 of its best wines, including the manzanilla, and at the end, buy the products directly in the winery's shop.
