📜What is the History of the Falla Theatre in Cádiz?

History: From Fire to Centenary

The history of the Falla Theatre in Cádiz begins with a fire. In 1881, the old Gran Teatro de Cádiz, built of wood in 1871 by the architect García del Álamo, was reduced to ashes. On its site, the City Council decided to build a new, more ambitious theatre.

Construction began in 1884 under the design of Adolfo Morales de los Ríos and Adolfo del Castillo Escribano, with Miguel Martínez de Pinillos serving as mayor. But a lack of funds halted construction on several occasions. It wasn't until 1905 that it was finally completed, thanks to the efforts of the municipal architect, Juan Cabrera de la Torre, who substantially modified the original project.

On January 12, 1910, it was finally inaugurated with a performance of a symphony by Barbieri, during the mayorship of Sebastián Martínez de Pinillos y Tourné. Until 1926, it was simply called the Gran Teatro, the year in which it was renamed the Gran Teatro Falla de Cádiz in honor of the city's most beloved son, the renowned composer Manuel de Falla. A year later, in 1927, Carnival music was performed for the first time on its stage by the choir "Los Pelotaris" directed by Manuel López Cañamaque.

The building underwent extensive restoration between 1986 and 1991, overseen by architects Rafael Otero and José Antonio Carvajal. During this period, the Carnival Competition was temporarily relocated to the now-demolished Teatro Andalucía. The reopening, on October 18, 1991, was presided over by Her Majesty Queen Sofía. In 2010, it celebrated its centenary with an exhibition entitled "One Hundred Years on Stage" and special guided tours that revealed areas inaccessible to the general public. Finally, in December 2019, it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest, recognizing its heritage value.

🏛️ What is the Architecture of the Falla Theatre in Cádiz?

In the Neo-Mudéjar style, the Falla is a true work of art. It is built of exposed red brick and features three large doorways on its main façade with horseshoe arches in the Cordoban Emirate style, with alternating red and white voussoirs reminiscent of the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba.

Its floor plan is horseshoe-shaped, to which the different levels are adapted: stalls, boxes, amphitheater, and the popular "paradise" (the upper gallery), with a total capacity for 1,214 spectators. The stage is enormous: 18 meters wide by 25.5 meters deep. But the jewel in the crown is on the ceiling: an allegory of Paradise, a work by the painter Felipe Abárzuza y Rodríguez de Arias, which covers the auditorium with a celestial scene. The large foyer is richly decorated with paintings inspired by Nasrid art.
