World Cancer Research Day arrives in Seville

🔬When will World Cancer Research Day be and why is it celebrated?

World Cancer Research Day will be commemorated every 24 September. This date is no coincidence: it coincides with the birth of Dr Severo Ochoa, the Spanish scientist who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1959 for his discoveries in molecular genetics and who became a world reference in research.

The main objective of World Cancer Research Day will be to raise awareness of the importance of cancer research, recognise the work of scientists and mobilise society to support projects that, day by day, bring us closer to a cure. As the CRIS Foundation Against Cancer summarises, it is the “engine that transforms diagnosis into hope and data into saved lives”.

Its goals are ambitious and necessary: to increase survival, facilitate access to scientific advances and reduce the global burden of cancer.

The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) will be one of the pioneering entities promoting this commemoration in Spain since 2016, and it will become a day of advocacy and hope.

🎯 Why is cancer research so important?

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death worldwide, with nearly 10 million deaths annually. World Cancer Research Day will remind us that the only way to change these figures is to invest in science and talent.

Advances in recent years are hopeful. Research has moved from studying tumours in isolation to analysing the body as a whole, thanks to techniques such as massive genomic sequencing (which has gone from costing $3 billion and 15 years to being performed for less than 500 euros in a few days) and advanced computing, which integrates data from thousands of patients.

Thanks to these advances, it is now possible to develop precision therapies, immunotherapy and new prevention strategies.

In Spain, the commitment to research is firm. Since 2018, the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) alone will have allocated more than 244 million euros to 1,059 research projects on the origin, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, an investment that, together with other budget items, will reach 460 million euros.

🏛️ How will World Cancer Research Day be celebrated in Seville in 2025?

Seville will once again demonstrate its commitment to social causes during this day. The events in the Andalusian capital will reflect the importance of research and citizen solidarity.

🎗️ Against Cancer Awards at the Royal Alcazar

The setting could not be more emblematic: the Royal Alcazar of Seville will host the gala for the Against Cancer Awards 2025, organised by the AECC. The event, which will take place in the Salón del Almirante, will recognise the careers of five veteran cancer researchers in Seville.

During the gala, research will be claimed as “the main weapon against cancer” and “stable support” for scientific talent will be requested so that researchers can work and return to Spain, as well as “innovation close to the patient”.

🎭 'Enmascarado 2025' Event: A Venetian solidarity festival

On 27 September 2025, the sixth edition of 'Enmascarado' will take place, a charity festival inspired by the Venice Carnival that will flood the city centre and the Triana neighbourhood with music, circus, magic and street parades. The event will take place at different emblematic points such as Paseo de Cristóbal Colón, Plaza del Altozano and Muelle de la Sal.

Its purpose will be to raise funds to support cancer research. Attendees can contribute by making donations in the different squares or through the 'White Mask' on the association's website.

📢 Street events and information stands

The AECC will also take to the city streets, setting up information stands and awareness points in different parts of Seville to inform the public about the importance of supporting cancer research.

📈 Local data: the fight in the province of Seville

During the events, it will be recalled that 11,000 people in the province of Seville received a cancer diagnosis, a fact that reinforces the urgency of continuing to advance research. The president of the AECC in Seville, Jesús Maza, will describe that moment as “the starting station of a journey full of uncertainty, fear, hope and pain” and will underline the need to support science to change that destiny.
