Torre Tavira, The Watchtower that Offers the Best Views of Cádiz

Torre Tavira, The Watchtower that Offers the Best Views of Cádiz

🗼 The Torre Tavira, located on Calle Marqués del Real Tesoro, in the Palace of the Marquises of Recaño, was designated the official watchtower of the port of Cádiz in 1778. It owes its name to its first watchman, frigate lieutenant Antonio Tavira.

For more than two centuries, its watchmen announced the arrival of ships to the port, making it a symbol of the city's commercial splendour in the 18th century.

Today, the Torre Tavira is one of the most emblematic tourist attractions in Cádiz.

👁️  At The Sun Places we want you to discover the Torre Tavira and enjoy its stunning views.

That's why we invite you to learn about its history and its famous camera obscura, staying at our Luxury Apartments in Cádiz, located in the heart of the capital, near the Gran Teatro Falla, the Cádiz Cathedral and the Viña Neighbourhood.

✨   The Torre Tavira is much more than a watchtower. It is a privileged viewpoint from which you can see the city at 360 degrees. The golden dome of Cádiz Cathedral, the network of streets of the old town, the bay and the Atlantic Ocean merge into a breathtaking panorama.

As the popular saying goes, "he who climbs the Torre Tavira, sees all of Cádiz". A unique experience that no visitor should miss.

The Torre Tavira stands out on the upper part of the Palace of the Marquises of Recaño, built in 1730. The building, in Baroque style, has been listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 2005.

The tower itself has a rectangular floor plan and consists of two floors: a first floor with four balconies facing the four cardinal points, and a second floor that houses the camera obscura.

The Torre Tavira is, together with the cathedral towers, the highest point in the city, at approximately 33 metres above the ground.

🔭   The Camera Obscura of the Torre Tavira: A Unique Optical Experience

The Torre Tavira houses the Camera Obscura, one of the most unique tourist attractions in Cádiz. Inaugurated on 22 December 1994, it was the first camera obscura installed in Spain.

It is an optical instrument that projects a colour and moving image onto a curved white screen, reflecting what is happening outside the tower at that very moment. A fascinating experience that combines science, history and heritage.

The idea of installing the Camera Obscura in the Torre Tavira came from the entrepreneur Belén González Dorao.

After seeing a camera obscura in Edinburgh, she thought that Cádiz's privileged light and the tower's location could offer spectacular results. And so it was.

Today, the Camera Obscura of the Torre Tavira is a world reference, with the patent for Spain of the Utility Model. Since its installation, other camera obscuras have been installed in Spain, Europe and even across the Atlantic.

The visit to the Torre Tavira includes an explanation of how the camera obscura works, as well as the possibility of enjoying panoramic views from its terrace.

The tower has two exhibition rooms that complete the experience, showing the history of the tower and trade with the Indies.

🏛️   History of the Torre Tavira: Three Centuries of Surveillance and Splendour

The Torre Tavira was built in 1730, at the height of Cádiz's splendour thanks to trade with the Americas. At that time, the city was filled with wealthy merchants who built luxurious palace houses, many of them crowned with watchtowers.

The Torre Tavira was, and still is, the most important of them all.

In 1778, the Torre Tavira was designated the official watchtower of the port of Cádiz for being the highest. Since then, and for more than two centuries, its watchmen scanned the horizon for ships, announcing their arrival to the city.

The tower's name honours its first watchman, frigate lieutenant Antonio Tavira. The Torre Tavira thus became a symbol of the commercial splendour and vitality of 18th-century Cádiz.

The Palace of the Marquises of Recaño, which houses the Torre Tavira, has had multiple uses over the centuries.

It was the Free School of Drawing, Arithmetic and Geometry, seat of the Supreme Court in 1812, School of Fine Arts, Teacher Training College and school of the Sisters of Charity.

Today, the building houses the Cádiz Carnival House. A space that, like the Torre Tavira, continues to witness the living history of the city.
