🏘️ The Village of El Rocío: the heart of the world's largest pilgrimage
What is The Village of El Rocío?
The Village of El Rocío, also known simply as El Rocío, is much more than a handful of houses in the middle of the marshes.
It is the soul of the world's largest Marian pilgrimage, a unique place where popular faith, traditional architecture and outdoor life blend into an unforgettable experience. At The Sun Places we invite you to discover the magic of the Village of El Rocío, a place you must visit at least once in your life.
📍Where is The Village of El Rocío located?
The Village of El Rocío belongs to the municipality of Almonte, in the province of Huelva, within the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is located at an intermediate geographical point between the main town of Almonte and the Atlantic coast of Matalascañas, in the heart of the Doñana National Park, one of the most important natural spaces in Europe.
Being in the Village of El Rocío means living in the midst of wild nature, with the marshes and the mouth of the Guadalquivir as a backdrop.
🏛️ The unique charm of The Village of El Rocío
The Village of El Rocío has a unique architecture and culture that make it a fascinating place.
🌿 Sand streets and horses
- The first thing that surprises visitors to the Village of El Rocío is the absence of asphalt. Its wide streets, laid out parallel and perpendicularly, are made of sand, a feature that is not a decoration but part of its identity that they do not want to lose because it would "take away the essence of this place". The horse is the king in this place, declared an "International Village of the Horse" in 1992. It is common to see riders and horse-drawn carriages moving through its streets.
🏡 White houses and brotherhood houses
- The architecture of the Village of El Rocío is another of its great attractions. Large white Andalusian-style houses predominate, with whitewashed facades and porches with wooden columns that give it a unique southern air.
- But, without a doubt, the most emblematic buildings are the brotherhood houses, the headquarters of the daughter brotherhoods, which line up around the hermitage. Each one has its own identity and reflects the history and character of each Rocío town. The brotherhood of Seville, for example, has the largest house in the entire village, with 5,300 m².
What do the Brotherhoods represent in the Village of El Rocío?
🤝 The brotherhoods: the soul of the Village of El Rocío
- Life in the Village of El Rocío revolves around its brotherhoods. They are much more than religious organisations; they are associations of the faithful, run by laypeople, who keep the devotion to the Virgin alive throughout the year and are the true protagonists of the Rocío Pilgrimage.
🗺️ The organisation: Mother and Daughter Brotherhoods
- The Mother Brotherhood of Almonte is the main and founding brotherhood (17th century). It is responsible for guarding the image of the Virgin and for accepting new brotherhoods.
- The rest are called daughter brotherhoods. There are currently 127 daughter brotherhoods, spread throughout Spain and even beyond our borders, as a result of Andalusian emigration. The only daughter brotherhood outside Spain is the one in Brussels, constituted in 1996 and named a daughter branch in 2000.
⏳The oldest brotherhoods in the Village of El Rocío
The six brotherhoods that signed the concordat around the Brotherhood of Almonte in 1724 are considered the most veteran. The brotherhoods with houses in the Village of El Rocío founded in the mid-19th century include those of Sanlúcar de Barrameda (1844), Villamanrique de la Condesa (1846), Pilas, La Palma del Condado, Moguer and Triana.
🏘️ A village organised by brotherhoods
The village is organised according to these brotherhoods. Knowing which street each brotherhood house is located on is essential for pilgrims and visitors, especially during the Rocío Pilgrimage, and maps are published to locate them easily.
- ⛪ The Rocío Pilgrimage: the great event of the Village. The reason for being of the Village of El Rocío is, without a doubt, the massive Rocío Pilgrimage, a manifestation of popular Catholic religiosity celebrated in honour of the Virgin of El Rocío.
📅 When is the Rocío Pilgrimage?
The Rocío Pilgrimage takes place in May or June, coinciding with the feast of Pentecost (50 days after Easter Sunday).
- Recognitions: Declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1965 and a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 1980.
🚶♂️The journey to the Village of El Rocío
The climax of the Rocío Pilgrimage is the journey that each brotherhood makes from its home town to the Village of El Rocío. A journey of faith, sacrifice and fellowship that can last several days, made on foot, on horseback or in decorated carts.
- Departure: On the day of departure, the brotherhood celebrates a mass and places its simpecado (banner with the Virgin) on a cart to begin the journey.
- Arrival: The first to arrive at the Village of El Rocío is the Brotherhood of Almonte, which covers the 15 kilometres from its headquarters.
- Different routes: Each brotherhood follows its own route. The brotherhoods from Cádiz, for example, pass through Sanlúcar de Barrameda and cross the Guadalquivir River by barge to enter Doñana. Six daughter brotherhoods leave from the city of Seville, and many from the province pass through Villamanrique de la Condesa.
