🏇The Sanlúcar Horse Races 2026 are much more than a equestrian competition: they are the essence of a people turned towards the beach. Declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, they have been held uninterrupted since 1845, making them the oldest beach horse races in Europe.
The event, organised by the Royal Horse Racing Society of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, consists of two cycles of three days each, which are always held at sunset, taking advantage of the low tides that leave a firm, compact sand track on Las Piletas Beach.
In 2026, the 181st edition will be held, reaffirming its place as one of the great events of the Andalusian summer. 📜 A bit of history: how the oldest beach horse races in Europe were born in Sanlúcar
The origin of the Sanlúcar Horse Races can be found in the informal competitions held by owners of equine livestock.
These animals were used to transport fish from the old port of Bajo de Guía to local markets, and soon the betting and excitement of speed turned them into a social event.
The tradition was officialised on 31 August 1845, when the first regulated races were held following the founding of the "Horse Racing Society of Sanlúcar de Barrameda".
Since then, neither wars nor inclement weather have managed to interrupt an event that, over the years, has received numerous accolades: it was declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1980 and, later, a Festival of International Tourist Interest.
The Royal Horse Racing Society of Sanlúcar, which still manages the event today, was awarded the Gold Medal of Andalusia for its work in promoting Andalusian culture and sport.
🏇181st edition and confirmed dates for the Sanlúcar Horse Races 2026
The Sanlúcar Horse Races 2026 will celebrate their 181st edition with the following official calendar, organised around the August spring tides that allow the event to take place during the evening low tide:
- First cycle: 8, 9 and 10 August 2026.
- Second cycle: 21, 22 and 23 August 2026.
The official race programme usually includes more than twenty events spread over the two cycles. The participating horses are thoroughbreds aged three years and over, and distances range from 1,400 to 2,000 metres.
Each day begins in the mid-afternoon (around 17:00) and continues into the night, when the sun sets over the Guadalquivir River Estuary and bathes the final race in gold.
The atmosphere can be felt hours in advance, with families and fans taking their places on the sand, in the stands or in chairs arranged along the shore.
🌊 A unique experience: the racecourse on the beach
What makes the Sanlúcar Horse Races 2026 special is, without a doubt, their setting.
Las Piletas Beach, at the foot of Bajo de Guía, is transformed for a few days into a natural 1,800-metre racecourse, delimited by a cord of fences and buoys that separate the track from the spectators.
The timing of the races is a perfectly synchronised choreography with nature: the cycles are scheduled according to the August spring tides, which mean the tide is low during the evening hours, leaving a firm, damp sand surface perfect for galloping.
The mixture of sea breeze, the smell of salt, the pre-start tension and the power of galloping horses creates an unrepeatable atmosphere.
Added to this is the possibility of placing legal horse racing bets at designated stalls, which adds an additional element of excitement and popular participation, just as has been done since the origins of turf racing in Spain.
🎟️ Where to watch the Sanlúcar Horse Races 2026?: stands, chairs and free access
There are different options for watching the Sanlúcar Horse Races 2026 to suit all tastes and budgets.
Access to the beach is completely free, and anyone can stand behind the fences, on the sand, to follow the race from trackside. This is a very popular option, especially among young people and families, but it requires arriving well in advance to get a good spot.
The experience is notably improved by opting for the official enclosure, managed by the Royal Society. There you can buy a ticket that gives access to the grandstand (between 10 and 20 € per day in previous editions), from where you can follow the course from an unbeatable perspective and access the paddocks to see the horses and jockeys before the race.
For a higher price, there are areas with reserved chairs and bar service, as well as private boxes for companies or groups. Due to high demand, it is highly recommended to purchase tickets in advance through the official website of the Royal Horse Racing Society (carrerassanlucar.es), where sales usually go live a few weeks before the event.
Regardless of the option chosen, it is essential to arrive with enough time to park, especially if travelling from outside Sanlúcar.
The Sun Places can take care of everything, from the Private Transfer from the Apartment, to purchasing VIP tickets to watch the Sanlúcar Horse Races 2026 or booking a table at one of the Restaurants in Sanlúcar or Cádiz.
