🌸 The Patios of Córdoba 2026: art, flowers and tradition that captivate the world

Córdoba is preparing to experience its most fragrant and eagerly awaited event of the year. From 4 to 17 May 2026, the caliphal city will open the doors of its most beautiful patios to celebrate The Patios of Córdoba 2026, a festival declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO that turns every corner of the historic centre into an explosion of colour and life.

At The Sun Places we tell you everything you need to know about this centuries-old tradition and why staying with us is the best way to experience it.

What is the history of the Patios of Córdoba?

📜 History: from ancient civilisations to the world's most famous competition

The origin of the Córdoba patios dates back to ancient times. Roman houses already had a central courtyard that served as a point of light, ventilation and family living. The Muslims adapted this layout, giving access to the home through an entrance hall and filling the courtyards with vegetation to increase the feeling of coolness.

The custom of opening the patios to the public began in 1918. However, it was not until 1921 that Mayor Francisco Fernández de Mesa organised the first Patio, Balcony and Window Competition, with three prizes of 100, 75 and 50 pesetas.

After several ups and downs, the festival was definitively consolidated from 1944 onwards, and in 1956 the Festival of the Córdoba Patios was born as a parallel programme of classical and flamenco music in the patios of historic monuments.

The Patios of Córdoba were declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1980 and, on 6 December 2012, UNESCO inscribed them on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

🏆 What does the competition consist of and what prizes do the Patios of Córdoba have?

The Patios of Córdoba 2026 is not a simple flower exhibition: it is an official competition organised by the Córdoba City Council, through the City Promotion Department. Participants decorate their patios all year round and open them free of charge to the public to show their creativity and effort.

The participating patios are classified into three categories: Ancient Architecture, Modern or Renovated Architecture, and Singular Patios. A specialised jury evaluates the architecture, floral decoration and "typicalness" of each space.

The cash prizes have increased over time. Today, the awards can amount to several thousand euros, and financial aid is also granted to non-winning patios to compensate the efforts of their caretakers.

In the 2026 edition, 53 patios are taking part in the competition and a total of 64 floral spaces can be visited throughout the city.
