🏛️ When faith, art and history come together in Barcelona, the Coronation of the Sagrada Familia by the Pope becomes the most important religious and cultural event of the 21st century.
On 10 June 2026, Pope Leo XIV will preside over a solemn mass in the basilica and bless the tower of Jesus Christ, the tallest in the temple, coinciding with the centenary of the death of Antoni Gaudí.
At 172.5 metres high, the tower makes the Sagrada Familia the tallest church in the world. Crowned by a three-dimensional cross with four arms clad in glass and white enameled ceramic, measuring 17 metres high and 13.5 metres wide. With this blessing, the basilica will officially become the tallest church in the world, surpassing Ulm Cathedral (161.5 metres)
At The Sun Places, we want you to experience this historic moment with maximum comfort, staying in our exclusive luxury apartments, located in emblematic areas such as Passeig de Gràcia or Plaça Catalunya.
Get ready for a day that will be forever etched in the city's memory.
📅 When is the Coronation of the Sagrada Familia?
The Coronation of the Sagrada Familia will take place on Wednesday 10 June 2026, a date full of symbolism.
That day marks exactly 100 years since the death of Antoni Gaudí, which occurred on 10 June 1926 after being run over by a tram in Barcelona.
The pontiff will arrive at the basilica at around 19:15, will officiate the solemn commemorative mass at 19:30 and will proceed to bless the tower of Jesus Christ, which will last approximately 15 minutes.
The drone light show will begin at 21:00 and will last until 21:30.
The day will be the culmination of the second day of Pope Leo XIV's visit to Barcelona, which will also include a visit to Montserrat Abbey, Brians 1 prison and the church of San Agustín in the Raval neighbourhood.
The events commemorating the Gaudí centenary began in autumn 2025 and will extend until Christmas 2026, with exhibitions, concerts and conferences throughout the city.
📍 Where is the Coronation of the Sagrada Familia by the Pope located?
The epicentre of the Coronation of the Sagrada Familia will be the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, located in the Eixample district, at the confluence of Mallorca, Provenza, Sardenya and Marina streets.
If you stay with The Sun Places on Passeig de Gràcia, you can walk in about 15 minutes along Provenza street or take a taxi that will drop you at the door.
During the Pope's visit, a special security operation will be established with traffic cuts around the entire perimeter of the temple and restricted access.
The route of the popemobile will begin at the junction of Rosselló street with Passeig de Gràcia, continue along Rosselló street, turn onto Sardenya street and arrive at the Nativity façade.
Thousands of people will crowd the pavements to greet the Holy Father, creating an atmosphere of deep emotion and devotion.
📜 History of the Sagrada Familia with the Vatican
The relationship between the Sagrada Familia and the popes dates back to 1871, when the founder of the Spiritual Association of Devotees of Saint Joseph, Josep Maria Bocabella, was received in audience by Pope Pius IX.
Upon his return, Bocabella promoted the construction of the temple, which began in 1882 under the pontificate of Leo XIII. However, the first visit of a pontiff to the basilica did not arrive until a hundred years later.
On 7 November 1982, John Paul II toured Barcelona in the popemobile and, from a podium installed on the Nativity façade, prayed the Angelus and blessed the thousands of faithful gathered.
His words were engraved on a stone plaque: "This temple of the Sagrada Familia recalls another building made of living stone: the Christian family". The second visit was the most momentous for the temple.
On 7 November 2010, Benedict XVI officiated the dedication ceremony of the Sagrada Familia, elevating it to the status of a minor basilica and officially opening it for worship.
More than 1,000 cardinals, bishops and priests concelebrated the mass, supported by 800 singers from the Coral de Sant Jordi, the Escolania de Montserrat and the Orfeó Català.
In 2021, Francis wanted to leave his mark on the temple remotely: he sent a video message on the occasion of the inauguration of the tower of the Virgin Mary, on 8 December 2021, the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Now, in 2026, Leo XIV will become the third Pope to visit the Sagrada Familia and the first to bless the tower of Jesus Christ, thus culminating a dream that Gaudí conceived more than a century ago.
🧑💼 Who organises the Coronation of the Sagrada Familia?
The Coronation of the Sagrada Familia is being organised jointly by the Holy See (through the Vatican's Secretariat of State), the Spanish Episcopal Conference, the Archbishopric of Barcelona (headed by Cardinal Joan Josep Omella i Omella) and the Construction Board of the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia, chaired by Esteve Camps.
Logistical coordination is provided by the Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council and the Government of Spain, which declared the Gaudí centenary an Event of Exceptional Public Interest (AEIP) in July 2025.
The event is also part of the official programme of the Gaudí Year 2026, promoted by the Gaudí Council, an entity that brings together the main cultural and architectural institutions of Catalonia.
🌟 What the Coronation of the Sagrada Familia by the Pope represents for Barcelona, Catalonia and The Sun Places
The Coronation of the Sagrada Familia is much more than a religious act: it is an architectural milestone, a universal recognition of Gaudí's genius and a major tourist and economic boost for Barcelona.
The completion and blessing of the tower of Jesus Christ will make the Sagrada Familia the tallest church in the world, a record that will attract millions of visitors in the coming years.
In 2025 alone, the basilica received nearly 5 million visitors, and it is expected that in 2026 the figure will exceed 6 million.
The economic impact of the event is estimated at more than 50 million euros during the week of the papal visit alone, with hotels, restaurants and luxury shops at 100% occupancy.
For The Sun Places, this historic event represents the perfect opportunity to offer our guests an unforgettable experience that combines faith, art, history and luxury.

🍽️ Gastronomy and special features of the Coronation of the Sagrada Familia by the Pope
The day of the Coronation of the Sagrada Familia will be accompanied by a special gastronomic offer in the surrounding restaurants.
Many establishments on Passeig de Gràcia and Provenza street will offer commemorative menus inspired by traditional Catalan cuisine and the favourite dishes of the popes.
For example, Restaurant Disfrutar (three Michelin stars) will create a tasting menu called «Gaudí», which will include dishes such as «The Cross of the Sagrada Familia» (confit cod with saffron foam) and «Mary's Garden» (seasonal fruit dessert with violet ice cream).
The vermouth bars of Gràcia and the El Born neighbourhood will offer special barrel-aged vermouths to celebrate the centenary.
A curiosity: during the mass, 10,000 loaves blessed by the Pope will be distributed among the faithful, made by prestigious Barcelona baker Jordi Morera with organic flour from the province of Lleida.
Solidarity food stalls will also be set up in Gaudí Square and the surrounding streets, where attendees can enjoy free meat broth, butifarra sausage and bread with tomato.
For those seeking a luxury experience, we recommend booking a table at Torre de Alta Mar (a restaurant located 75 metres high in the Port of Barcelona) or at the Hotel ME Barcelona, from where you can see the fireworks and the drone show.
