The Circumnavigation Programme in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a Journey to the 16th Century

🌍 At The Sun Places, luxury is also found in history and culture. That's why we invite you to discover the Circumnavigation Programme in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, the best guide to experience live the feat of Magellan and Elcano. From 1 to 20 September 2026, the town relives the epic of the First Circumnavigation of the World with more than twenty cultural activities including historical reenactments, concerts, tastings and a medieval market.

With The Sun Places, we want this experience to be part of your luxury stay, offering you the chance to walk the same paths as those brave sailors and to understand why the city is the starting point and return of the greatest adventure in history.

The city has gone down in history because Magellan set sail from its beaches on 20 September 1519 and completed the First Circumnavigation of the Earth. To relive this historic feat, the town has a Circumnavigation Route, an urban itinerary that passes through the city's key points related to this episode. In addition to this, every year the City Council organises various initiatives to commemorate the Circumnavigation Month. This 2026, the Circle of Artisans, the City Council and the beach bar La Orilla have designed the programme to celebrate it next September.

The Circumnavigation Programme in Sanlúcar de Barrameda: activities from 1 to 20 September

The activities will begin on Tuesday 1 September with the medieval music reinterpretation show 'Mirror of the Stars' in the Las Piletas garden. From there, more than twenty events of very different characteristics will be held in different parts of the city until 20 September. The programme, which includes more than 20 initiatives, is spread across venues such as the Municipal Palace, the 'Manolo Sanlúcar' Municipal Auditorium, the La Victoria Cultural Centre, Exploraterra Sanlúcar at the Castillito de Bajo de Guía, the Castle of Santiago, the Ducal Palace of Medina Sidonia and the Las Piletas garden itself, as well as the Plaza de la Paz and Manuel Romero Pazos squares, and the La Orilla beach bar.

The Day of Arrival: 6 September

Once again, the symbolic landing will take place on Bajo de Guía beach, followed by a street parade through the city towards the Castle of Santiago, where the Dinner with Elcano will be held. This will be on Sunday 6 September, the central day of the Circumnavigation Month because on that same day in 1522 the sailors of the First Circumnavigation returned with Juan Sebastián Elcano at the helm. The reenactment will begin at 5:30 PM and will run through the city's streets, recreating the arrival of those 18 men after a voyage that had begun three years earlier. The main events of this day are:

  • 5:30 PM – Historical reenactment of the landing at Bajo de Guía and street parade to the Castle of Santiago.
  • 9:30 PM – Dinner with Elcano at the Castle of Santiago. Bookings at the Circle of Artisans (956 36 08 78) and at La Orilla Beach Bar (602 60 79 05).
