📜 History of the Castle of San Sebastián: 3,000 Years on an Islet
The history of the Castle of San Sebastián dates back to Antiquity. According to classical tradition, the islet housed the Temple of Moloch/Kronos, a sacred place for the Phoenicians and Romans.
The geographer Strabo mentions this temple in his writings, placing the city of Gades on the western part of the island and the Kronion at the end that extends towards the islet.
The Castle of San Sebastián stands on a site of ancient worship.
In 1457, the islet welcomed the crew of a Venetian ship who were recovering from the plague. In gratitude, they built a hermitage under the invocation of San Sebastián, using the remains of an old Muslim watchtower.
