🏛️ History of the Bay of Cádiz: 3,000 Years of Civilisations
The history of the Bay of Cádiz is the history of the city of Cádiz, the oldest in the West. Classical sources place its foundation in 1100 BC by the Phoenicians, although modern historical science places it around 800 BC, when Phoenician navigators from Tyre arrived at the Bay of Cádiz.
They founded GADIR (meaning enclosed compound), which would become a base for Mediterranean and Atlantic trade routes.
With the decline of Tyre, the Bay of Cádiz came under the protection of Carthage. From the 5th century BC, the Carthaginians exercised their dominion over Gadir, giving it an important role in their network of coastal factories and in the development of the Punic Wars between Carthage and Rome.
The Bay of Cádiz witnessed these confrontations and the subsequent liberation of the Gaditanians from Carthaginian rule through a pact with Rome, with the city becoming known as GADES.

Later, the Castilian king Alfonso X the Wise conquered and repopulated Cádiz in 1262, converting the old Arab mosque into the first cathedral temple.
The 18th century was the period of the city's renaissance, as its port became the great commercial gateway for trade with the recently discovered New World.
