🏛️ At The Sun Places we know that luxury is also found in history, faith and monumental architecture.
That's why we invite you to discover the Almudena Cathedral, one of Madrid's most fascinating and unique temples.
Dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena, patron saint of the city, this cathedral is the youngest in Spain and the only one consecrated by a Pope.
Its construction, which lasted over 110 years, has resulted in a building of exceptional architectural richness: neoclassical on the outside to harmonise with the neighbouring Royal Palace, neogothic on the inside and neo-Romanesque in its impressive crypt.
The Almudena Cathedral is much more than a place of worship; it is a journey through the history of Madrid, a privileged viewpoint over the city and a silent witness to the great events that have marked the capital. The Sun Places invites you to discover it, staying in our Luxury Apartments in Madrid.
The Almudena Cathedral is one of the most unique religious buildings in Europe.
📜 History of the Almudena Cathedral
The history of the Almudena Cathedral is full of legends, longings and a long wait.
According to tradition, the image of the Virgin of Almudena was found in a niche in the Muslim wall of Madrid in 1085, during the conquest of the city by Alfonso VI.
Devotion to this Virgin became one of the deepest-rooted in the capital. However, it was not until the 19th century that it was decided to build a cathedral in her honour. Until then, Madrid did not have its own cathedral, as it depended ecclesiastically on the diocese of Toledo.
The project began in 1883, with the laying of the first stone by King Alfonso XII and Queen María Cristina. The works, however, lasted much longer than expected.
Lack of funds, wars (the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939), changes of project and discussions about the architectural style (neo-Gothic vs. neoclassical) caused the construction to slow down and be interrupted on several occasions.
Finally, the temple was consecrated on 15 June 1993 by Pope John Paul II, thus becoming the only cathedral in Spain consecrated by a Pope.
The Almudena Cathedral is therefore the youngest temple in Spain, but its history spans more than eleven decades.

🏛️ Architecture and spaces of the Almudena Cathedral
The Almudena Cathedral is a building of exceptional architectural richness. Its exterior, in a neoclassical style, was designed to harmonise with the neighbouring Royal Palace, while its interior is in a neo-Gothic style. The cathedral has a Latin cross plan with three naves, a dome over the transept and a polygonal apse. Among its most prominent spaces are:
- The Crypt of Almudena: It is one of the most unique spaces in the cathedral. Built in a neo-Romanesque style with Mozarabic influences, it was the first part of the temple to be completed, and was opened for worship in 1911. It houses the original image of the Virgin of Almudena and is the place where the remains of several cardinals of Madrid rest. The crypt is an architectural jewel that combines semicircular arches, granite columns and sober, elegant decoration.
- The Dome-viewpoint: One of the most fascinating experiences of the visit to the Almudena Cathedral is going up to its dome-viewpoint. From the top, you get spectacular views of Madrid, with the Royal Palace, the Habsburg Madrid, the Plaza Mayor and the Cibeles in the background. Access is via a spiral staircase, and the panoramic view is one of the best in the city.
- The Cathedral Museum: Located in the old sacristy, the museum houses a collection of vestments, monstrances, chalices and other liturgical objects, as well as the original image of the Virgin of Almudena. It is a space that allows you to discover the history and devotion of the cathedral through its most valuable pieces.
🖼️ The altarpiece and chapels of the Almudena Cathedral
The interior of the Almudena Cathedral houses a main altarpiece in neo-Gothic style and several chapels dedicated to different advocations. Among them, the following stand out:
- The Chapel of the Virgin of Almudena: This is the most important chapel in the cathedral, where the patron saint of Madrid is venerated. The image of the Virgin, a polychrome wooden carving from the 15th century, is located in a baroque camarín of great beauty.
- The Chapel of the Most Holy Christ of the Good Death: A Baroque-style chapel that houses a crucifix of great artistic value.
- The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception: Dedicated to the patron saint of Spain, with a neo-Gothic altarpiece.
🎭 Events and celebrations at the Almudena Cathedral
The Almudena Cathedral is the setting for the city's main religious events, such as the feast of the Virgin of Almudena (9 November), the Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and the ceremonies of the Three Wise Men.
It has also been the venue for great events of the Spanish royal family, such as the wedding of the Princes of Asturias, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia, in 2004.
