A native of Seville, Mar García Ranedo is a visual artist, researcher and tenured professor in the Department of Drawing at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Seville. For García Ranedo, this commission came with a strong emotional charge, as Sanlúcar occupies "a special place" in her life: a large part of her husband's family, as well as close friends, are from Sanlúcar. Interestingly, this is not the first time her family has been linked to this competition: in 2018, her husband, also an artist Dionisio González, was in charge of creating the poster for the races.
The Poster for the Horse Races in Sanlúcar de Barrameda 2025 establishes a dialogue with the Expressionist movement Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), founded by Kandinsky and Franz Marc. In the poster, horses and riders emerge from a blue membrane that places them on the shore, right in the heat of the start. The artist conceives the image as a visual synthesis between the cosmic and the earthly:
- In the upper part, the solar cycles are represented by geometric shapes and circles in warm tones that evoke the sun's transit towards sunset.
- In the lower part, a wash hatched in deep blue represents the moment of the start. Blue conveys serenity, tenacity and concentration, symbolising the horse and rider focusing on the finish line.
The typography, created in collaboration with designer Ale Rojas, draws on the Art Deco style and serves as a tribute to the official guides published in Sanlúcar during the 1920s and 1930s.
