Seville is already prepared for Holy Week

📅 When is Holy Week 2024 in Seville?

Holy Week 2024 in Seville will begin on Sunday 24 March, known as Palm Sunday, and will last until Sunday 31 March, Easter Sunday. During these eight days, the city’s streets become the setting for one of the most important and emotionally charged religious celebrations in the world.

Holy Week commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, following the liturgical calendar that marks the key events: the triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), the Last Supper (Maundy Thursday), the Way of the Cross and the crucifixion (Good Friday), and the Resurrection (Easter Sunday).

🏛️ Holy Week: Much More than Religion

In addition to its religious aspects, Holy Week in Seville is a social, cultural, tourist and economic phenomenon of great importance. Declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 1980, it attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world each year who immerse themselves in the city’s unique atmosphere.

Thousands of Sevillians prepare throughout the year the processions that run through the streets. Lent continues until dusk on Maundy Thursday, when the Paschal Triduum begins, the liturgical heart of the celebration.

🏛️ What is the Official Route (Carrera Oficial) and the Brotherhoods?

The General Council of Brotherhoods and Confraternities of Seville is the body responsible for regulating the processions. It controls the times for passing through an established route in the city centre known as the Official Route (Carrera Oficial), which runs from La Campana, along Calle Sierpes, Plaza de San Francisco, Avenida de la Constitución and the Cathedral.

In 2024, 60 brotherhoods will perform their penance station at the Seville Cathedral, while 16 brotherhoods and parish groups will process on the preceding days — Friday of Sorrows and Saturday of Passion — without going to the Cathedral.

🎭 The Structure of a Procession

The processions of Holy Week open with the guide cross, usually accompanied by a pair of nazarenes (penitents) with lanterns. Following it begins the procession of nazarenes, who carry candles or crosses as penance.

The most common insignia that accompany the floats are:

Senatus

  • In memory of the Roman army that guarded Christ

Flags

  • Accompany each float, with colours representing the Passion or Marian themes

Simpecado

  • In defence of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception

Rule book

  • Rules and tradition of the brotherhood

Standard

  • Symbol of the brotherhood

The procession of nazarenes usually ends with the horns that announced the float, then the presidency, and after them, the acolytes and the floats.
