📜 History of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri: From Temple to Seat of the Cortes
The history of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri begins in 1671, when the Filippini fathers settled in Cádiz. The construction of the current temple began in 1685 following the plans of the master builder Blas Díaz, who was originally from Ceuta.
It was inaugurated in 1719, although in 1764 the roof was rebuilt due to damage caused by the 1755 tsunami. The Oratory of San Felipe Neri is an example of the full splendour of Cádiz's Baroque.
The most important moment in the history of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri came in 1810, during the Napoleonic invasion. In the face of the French advance, the Cortes Generales moved to Cádiz, and on 24 September 1810 they were installed in the Teatro de San Fernando.
However, in February 1811, the Cortes moved to the Oratory of San Felipe Neri, where they remained until 1813. It was in this place that the first Spanish constitution, known as "La Pepa", was drafted and proclaimed on 19 March 1812. The Oratory of San Felipe Neri became the cradle of Spanish democracy.
The Oratory of San Felipe Neri has witnessed other historical moments. In 1823, the cortes that ended the Liberal Triennium were held here. 🏛️ Architecture of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri: A Unique Elliptical Temple
The Oratory of San Felipe Neri is one of the most singular examples of Spanish Baroque. Its elliptical floor plan, inspired by the church of San Giacomo del Corso in Rome and by Jesuit church models, is one of the most distinctive features of the temple.
The floor plan is inscribed within a rectangle, and seven rectangular chapels with barrel vaults and rich decoration open onto it. The Oratory of San Felipe Neri is an architectural landmark in Cádiz.
The dome of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri is another of its most outstanding elements. It is a cambered dome, with two sections and eight windows, rebuilt in 1764 by master Pedro Luis Gutiérrez de San Martín (Pedro Afanador) after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Its construction was a great technical feat, and it is one of the most impressive structures in Cádiz's architecture. The Oratory of San Felipe Neri is a landmark in the city's skyline.
🎨 The High Altarpiece and Murillo's Immaculate Conception
The interior of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri houses works of art of great value. The main altarpiece, a Rococo work from the 18th century in gilded wood, is one of the most outstanding pieces.
In its centre is a canvas of the Immaculate Conception, a work by the famous Sevillian painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.
It is considered one of the painter's best works, and it is said that the artist used his daughter Francisca, a nun at the Convent of Madre de Dios, as a model. The Oratory of San Felipe Neri is a museum of sacred art.
Other chapels in the Oratory of San Felipe Neri also house works of great artistic interest. The Chapel of the Tabernacle, made of Carrara marble, is a work by the Genoese brothers Bernardo and Francesco Maria Schiaffino, considered one of the masterpieces of the Cádiz-Genoese school.
The Chapel of the Adoration of the Magi, with a relief by José Montes de Oca, and the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, with paintings alluding to the Passion of Christ, complete this impressive artistic ensemble. The Oratory of San Felipe Neri is a treasure of religious imagery.
