Stay in our Luxury Accommodation on the Costa Brava and discover this corner where glamour combines with the tranquillity of a fishing village.

Llafranc and its beaches are the natural luxury of the Costa Brava. This small hamlet in the municipality of Palafrugell, located between Calella de Palafrugell and Tamariu, is one of the most charming and distinctive coastal towns on the entire Catalan coastline.

Its shell-shaped bay, crystal-clear waters and relaxed atmosphere have attracted high-end travellers for decades, from Hollywood stars to flamenco artists.

Today we take you to discover Llafranc and its beaches with everything you need to enjoy them like a luxury traveller.

🌊  What does Llafranc and its beaches represent for the region and for The Sun Places?

Llafranc and its beaches represent the perfect synthesis between seafaring tradition and tourist sophistication.

For the Empordà, it is an example of how a small fishing village can become a prestigious destination without losing its essence.

For Catalonia, it is an icon of the most authentic Costa Brava, far from mass tourism.

And for The Sun Places, Llafranc and its beaches embody the luxury of tranquillity: the luxury of strolling along a promenade without crowds, of dining by the sea with fresh produce, of playing sport in top-class facilities and of staying in a privileged setting.

Our Luxury Accommodation on the Costa Brava are located just a few minutes from the bay, and we can arrange everything from private yacht rentals to exclusive tennis matches.

We are committed to a peaceful, exclusive and nature-aligned tourism.

🏖️   The bay of Llafranc: the heart of Llafranc and its beaches

Llafranc beach is the main attraction of Llafranc and its beaches. It is a wide bay of calm, crystal-clear waters, ideal for families and travellers seeking comfort without sacrificing natural beauty.

Its sand is coarse-grained and the seabed slopes gently, making it perfect for swimming.

The beach is flanked by the Passeig de Cipsela, a pleasant seafront promenade full of life with terraces, restaurants and shops.

It has all services: parasol and sunbed hire, showers, adapted walkways and lifeguard service.

At one end of the bay is the marina, and from there the Camí de Ronda leads to the Sant Sebastià Lighthouse.

Llafranc and its beaches also offer nearby coves that can be explored on foot or by boat, such as Cala Pedrosa and Aigua Xelida, two hidden gems that are part of the wildest coastline of the Costa Brava.

🏄   Water activities in Llafranc and its beaches

The calm, crystal-clear waters of Llafranc and its beaches are perfect for water sports.

Kayaking, snorkelling and paddle surfing are very popular, and equipment can be rented directly on the beach.

Club Nàutic Llafranc offers light sailing activities during the summer months, as well as introductory courses.

There are also Diving Centres in the same cove that organise dives to discover the seabed of the Costa Brava.

If you like diving, don't miss diving in the Medes Islands, a submarine paradise just a few kilometres away.

🛥️  Llafranc marina: gateway to the Mediterranean

The small marina of Llafranc is located at the left end of the beach, at the foot of the Sant Sebastià Lighthouse.

It was inaugurated in 1970 and has 140 moorings for boats up to 14 metres in length, as well as services such as a fuel station, 24-hour surveillance, showers and a waiting area.

Club Nàutic Llafranc, founded on 30 April 1963, organises the annual Santa Rosa regattas at the end of August, the oldest on the Catalan coast.

From the port you can rent a boat without a licence or hire a boat with a skipper to explore the nearby coves, such as Cala Estreta, Illa Roja or Cala Pedrosa.

It is the ideal starting point to experience Llafranc and its beaches from a maritime perspective.

🎾  Llafranc Tennis Club: elite sport alongside Llafranc's beaches

One of the great jewels of Llafranc and its beaches is its tennis club, a benchmark on the Costa Brava.

Llafranc Tennis Club has 19 tennis courts (17 clay and 2 hard), 8 paddle courts, a 25-metre Olympic swimming pool, gym, multi-purpose sports court and restaurant with terrace.

With over 50 years of history, the club has hosted numerous tournaments and training camps for professional players.

In 2024, the club announced an expansion that includes new pickleball courts and improvements to the gym facilities.

It is the perfect place to combine racquet sports with relaxation on the beach.

🍽️   Gastronomy in Llafranc and its beaches: from black rice to Michelin stars

The gastronomic offering of Llafranc and its beaches is another of its great attractions.

From traditional fish restaurants to Michelin-starred establishments, quality is the dominant note.

Restaurant Casamar, located in a charming hotel, is one of the most award-winning on the Costa Brava, with modern, distinctive author cuisine that has earned it recognition from the Michelin Guide.

Restaurant Hotel Llafranc is another classic, famous for its arròs negre (black rice) and for the photographs of celebrities hanging on its walls: Rock Hudson, Sophia Loren, Kirk Douglas, Paco de Lucía and Dalí himself all passed through there.

Restaurant Terramar, right on the seafront, offers local products such as Palamós red prawns and grilled fish with spectacular views.

CEO's words: At The Sun Places, we know that luxury lies in the details. And for me, one of those details is called Restaurant La Sirena, in Llafranc. Dani and Carlos are the kind of family you don't see, but who mean everything. Their custom paellas... their squid a la romana... are a delight for the locals. And I confess that, after a dive with La Tritona from our great captain Emili, in any of the Ullastres, there is nothing better than a French omelette with a cold beer overlooking the Mediterranean. That is the Costa Brava we want to share with you and the one I have lived since childhood. The authentic one.

For a more informal but equally exclusive experience, the beach bar El Far, located near the port, serves author tapas and cocktails at sunset.

✨   The Gypsy of the Costa Brava and the glamour of Llafranc and its beaches

Llafranc and its beaches owe part of their fame to a singular character: Manuel Bisbe, known as "the Gypsy of the Costa Brava".

In the 1950s, Manuel became the soul of the Hotel Llafranc, attracting national and international celebrities with his flamenco shows and late-night parties.

It was the dancer Carmen Amaya who gave him the nickname "Gypsy of the Costa Brava" in a pompous ceremony on the beach in 1970.

Artists such as Antonio Gades, Paco de Lucía, Manolo Escobar, Salvador Dalí, and Hollywood stars such as Burt Lancaster, Sophia Loren and Kirk Douglas all passed through the hotel.

Manuel's nephew, now nicknamed "Rambo", keeps the tradition of weekend parties alive during the summer, opening champagne bottles with a machete at the hotel bar.

This heritage of glamour and fun is an inseparable part of the character of Llafranc and its beaches.

🏛️   What to see near Llafranc and its beaches? Sant Sebastià Lighthouse and the Camí de Ronda

One of the must-do activities when visiting Llafranc and its beaches is to climb to the Sant Sebastià Lighthouse.

Located 169 metres above sea level, this 19th-century lighthouse offers one of the most spectacular panoramas of the entire Costa Brava. From there you can see the entire bay of Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugell and, on clear days, the Montgrí Massif.

Next to the lighthouse, the remains of a 15th-century watchtower and a medieval hermitage are preserved.

The climb can be done from the port via a steep but firm path, or by car along the paved road.

It is also worth walking the Camí de Ronda that connects Llafranc with Calella de Palafrugell. And in July, don't miss the Havanera singing and a good Ron Cremat at Calella's Fiesta Mayor.

This 3-kilometre stretch, accessible and well-signposted, passes through spectacular coves such as Port Bo, Canadell and Port Pelegrí, and offers uninterrupted sea views.

It is ideal for a morning walk before swimming or at sunset.
