What is the history of Holy Week in Cádiz?

📜 History: Roots that Go Back to the 16th Century

The brotherhood tradition in Cádiz has its origins in the 16th century, when the first brotherhoods began to perform their penance station. The oldest in the city is the Brotherhood of Vera‑Cruz, founded in 1566 by Friar Juan Navarro, whose crucified Christ is popularly known as the "Sleeping Emperor". In the province, the Mayor Dolor brotherhood in Jerez is even older, founded by tanners, shoemakers and curriers in 1488.

Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Cádiz experienced its period of greatest splendour as a commercial port with the Americas, and this wealth was reflected in the heritage of its brotherhoods. The images, embroideries and goldwork that process today are testament to that golden age.

Currently, the province has more than 300 brotherhoods and confraternities, making Holy Week in Cádiz a cultural manifestation of unparalleled richness.
