Galería Canalejas opened its doors to the public in 2021, although its construction was completed in several phases over the following years. The original building, designed by architect José Grases Riera, was inaugurated in 1895 and housed the famous "La Ciudad de Londres" department store.
After decades of neglect and several failed rehabilitation attempts, the project was taken up by the investment group OHL Desarrollos (later acquired by Mohari Hospitality), which invested more than 500 million euros in its transformation.
The result is an open-plan space of 15,000 square metres spread over three floors, with a glass roof that floods the entire complex with natural light.
The rehabilitation has respected the original façade and the architectural elements of interest, such as the imperial staircase or the dome frescoes. Galería Canalejas is, without a doubt, an architectural jewel worth visiting, even if you don't make any purchases.
