Dulcería de La Rondeña, the History, the Products and the Flavour of Tradition in Sanlúcar de Barrameda

🍰  At The Sun Places, luxury is also found in life's small pleasures.

That's why we want to introduce you to La Dulcería de La Rondeña, one of the most traditional bakeries in Sanlúcar. Since 1961, this family has sweetened generations with their famous "Rondeña" or royal pastry, a sweet that revolutionised Andalusian baking.

With The Sun Places, this authentic flavour can be part of your stay. Enjoy it in any of their shops or on our terrace, just steps from the Plaza del Cabildo, while time stands still.

In this article, we invite you to learn about their history, their most emblematic products, their locations and their commitment to innovation, with a gluten-free line that leaves no one out. And, of course, we tell you how to bring the flavour of La Rondeña to your experience with us.

Because luxury, in the end, is knowing how to enjoy.

History of La Rondeña in Sanlúcar: from boundless imagination to a sweet empire

The history of this firm is the story of a dream come true. Its founder, Juan Jiménez Domínguez, from a family of railway workers, was orphaned very young and had to support his six siblings.

From a very young age, he trained in the "Josefita" bakery, the Orozco family's bakery in Algodonales, where he learned the secrets of traditional baking. In 1961, already settled in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, he decided to start his own business, setting up a workshop in one of the rooms of his home. His imagination and tenacity were the values that laid the foundations of what is now the company.

Success came with the creation of the "royal pastry", a sweet that revolutionised breakfasts in bars, even competing with bread and butter and churros. The product was such a milestone that consumers began to call it directly by the brand name, "la Rondeña", a phenomenon of popularity that only happens with giants like Cola Cao or Avecrem.

Over time, Mr. Juan began to make polvorones and mantecados, faithful to traditional recipes and care in each piece. His flavour and quality quickly made him stand out in the Christmas campaigns throughout Spain, bringing the Sanlúcar spirit to thousands of homes.

In 2010, the brand reinvented the concept of traditional confectionery towards that of "Dulcería", giving way to its new physical shops with a careful old-fashioned style. Its expansion throughout the province and Andalusia includes key milestones: Sanlúcar de Barrameda (2010), Seville (2016), Jerez de la Frontera (2018) and Cádiz (2021). Today, in the hands of the second and third generations —his sons Juan Antonio, Carmelo and Miguel Ángel— the legacy remains intact.

In 2024, after three years of intense work, they took a further step in their commitment to inclusivity by opening an exclusive gluten-free workshop, maintaining the same flavour for everyone.

The star products of Sanlúcar's baking tradition

The Dulcería is famous for its wide variety of artisan products, but some of them have become true icons:

  • La Rondeña or Royal Pastry: It is the firm's star product, a small pastry filled with angel hair created in 1961. The secret recipe remains intact. It is made with margarine instead of butter, which gives it a much softer and fluffier texture.
  • Mantecados and polvorones: An undisputed Christmas classic that competes directly with the Estepa brands thanks to a selection of unique ingredients.
  • Traditional Andalusian pastries: Recovered local recipes such as Sanlúcar buns, polvorón cakes or bizcochadas, as well as seasonal sweets such as alpisteras and torrijas during Lent.
  • Gluten-free line: Artisan options made in a specific and independent workshop to guarantee total safety against cross-contamination.

La Rondeña shops and how to enjoy them during your stay

The firm's establishments stand out for their careful design that evokes old-fashioned bakeries. You can find them at:

  • Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Centre): Calle Ramón y Cajal, 3 (next to Plaza del Cabildo).
  • Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Factory): Avenida de la Rondeña s/n.
  • Jerez de la Frontera: Plaza del Arenal, 2.
  • Seville: Calle Asunción, 42 (includes café area).
  • Cádiz: Calle Ancha, 18 bis.

To bring this unique flavour to your experience, at The Sun Places we can offer our guests a selection of their products as part of our exclusive welcome pack.

Furthermore, their shop on Calle Ramón y Cajal, right in the historic heart, is just a few steps from the emblematic Plaza del Cabildo and just a few metres from our Luxury Apartments in Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

This proximity makes this bakery an essential stop to start the day with a sweet breakfast or end it with an unforgettable tea time. Bear in mind that this central shop does not have a café nor serve sandwiches, but with the immense quality of their display cases, we assure you that you won't miss them.

Quality and inclusivity: the artisan gluten-free line

The firm has evolved with the times and responded to the new needs of consumers. Aware of the importance of offering options for everyone, they have created an artisan gluten-free and lactose-free range. These products are made in a specific workshop, completely separate from the main one, which guarantees the total absence of cross-contamination.

Their varied inclusive offering stands out in two main segments:

  • Christmas Specialities: traditional polvorón, almond polvorón, cinnamon mantecado, lemon mantecado, cocoa mantecado and wine doughnuts.
  • Traditional Andalusian pastries: polvorón cake, almond cake, coconut cake, Sanlúcar bun, bizcochada and angel hair cortadillo.

The characteristic magenta colour on the packaging and logo visually distinguishes this range, offering a clear and safe signal for customers with coeliac disease and intolerances. The fact of having exclusive facilities for their production demonstrates the family business's firm commitment to health and social integration.

This effort and business trajectory have been formally recognised by the Regional Government of Andalusia, which has awarded the firm both for its weight in the local economy and for its contribution to the integration of people with special dietary needs.

Awards and recognition for a family trajectory

The journey of this sweet project is backed by prestigious awards that recognise its quality, the deep roots of its tradition and its constant capacity for innovation. In recent years, the Regional Government of Andalusia awarded the company the Flag of Andalusia in the Economy and Business category, a high honour that recognises its contribution to the business fabric of the province and its respect for traditional know-how. This award, received with enormous emotion by the Jiménez Romero family, is the best impetus to continue growing without losing its essence.

This distinction is joined by the honorary recognition of the Confederation of Businessmen of the Province of Cádiz (CEC) for its impeccable trajectory. However, the greatest award continues to be the favour of the public and local hospitality, which has consolidated the "Rondeña" or royal pastry as the indispensable accompaniment to Cádiz breakfasts.

Repsol Solete: the seal that consolidates its gastronomic excellence

In the purely gastronomic panorama, the firm has the prestigious Repsol Solete, a coveted distinction that the Repsol Guide awards to those special corners that guarantee an appetising, solvent and honest proposal.

The brand shares this brilliance on the gastronomic map of Sanlúcar de Barrameda alongside other great local references that also have their own Solete, such as Casa Gaspar, La Gitana, La Campana, Helados Toni, the iconic bar of Casa Balbino and Barbiana. Although the guide's distinction is technically included in the category of bakeries and cafés (like their location with tables in Seville), visiting their Sanlúcar shops is a true ritual to acquire the most select bites in the town.

What this Dulcería represents for Sanlúcar and The Sun Places

This corner is much more than a simple bakery: it is a cultural bastion and a pillar of Sanlúcar de Barrameda's identity. It represents the intergenerational effort of a family devoted to the purest artisan craft.
