Casino de la Exposición in Seville

Casino de la Exposición in Seville

🏛️ There are buildings that are much more than stone and brick. The Casino de la Exposición in Seville is one of them. Built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, this neo-baroque style palace was the setting for the most glamorous parties of Seville in the Roaring Twenties, where the bourgeoisie danced the Charleston and the boldest young women wore their hair à la garçonne.

Today, almost a century later, it remains a meeting place, a living space that hosts some of the city's most important cultural events.

At The Sun Places, where luxury is defined by authenticity and memorable experiences, we want to invite you to discover the history, the secrets and the present of this unique building. Stay with us and enjoy the Luxury Apartment Rental in Seville that we offer you and let yourself be surprised by a place that breathes the splendour of an era.

The Casino de la Exposición was not always called that. In its origins, it was part of the Seville Pavilion, the space that the host city dedicated to showing its splendour to the world during the '29 Expo. Together with the Lope de Vega Theatre, the complex was designed by the Valencian architect Vicente Traver y Tomás, who in 1926 replaced Aníbal González at the head of the Exposition works.

Traver adopted the Sevillian polychromy of white walls and albero-coloured mouldings, ceramics and Sevillian ironwork, creating a building that combines Andalusian tradition with the elegance of European casino-theatres such as those of Baden-Baden, Monte Carlo or Nice.

📜 History of the Casino de la Exposición

The Casino de la Exposición was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII on 9 May 1929, with the performance of a zarzuela set in Seville. It was quite a social event attended by great personalities of the time, and as a tribute, one of its boxes was named after Alfonso XIII. During the Ibero-American Exposition, the Casino functioned as the ballroom and reception hall of the Seville pavilion, the place where high society gathered to dance, socialise and enjoy shows.

After the Exposition ended, the building has had an intense and varied life. It has been a multi-purpose hall, a venue for cultural activities and a stage for events of various kinds. Within its walls, historic moments have been experienced, such as the 1987 World Chess Championship, when Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov faced each other in a duel that kept the world on tenterhooks for two months. Spanish television even interrupted football programming to connect live with the Casino and broadcast the outcome of the game.

Today, the Casino de la Exposición is a cultural space managed by the Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes de Sevilla (ICAS), which has turned it into the venue for events as important as the Seville European Film Festival or the Flamenco Biennial. Since 2012, it has also been the official headquarters of La Casa de los Poetas y las Letras.

🏛️ Architecture of the Casino de la Exposición

The Casino de la Exposición in Seville is an outstanding example of Sevillian regionalist architecture, with a clear influence of the neo-baroque. Its most distinctive element is the central rotunda, a circular lobby covered by a large dome that becomes the heart of the building. Traver was inspired by the façade of the central rotunda of the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam to design this space, which today continues to dazzle those who visit it.

Among the most outstanding details of the interior are:

  • The cast bronze coverings on the columns, with coloured marble inlays, a luxury that can be appreciated in every detail.
  • The antique mirrors whose slight distortions create a "hall of mirrors" effect that adds a touch of fun to the space.
  • The lamps with tassels and other decorative elements that maintain the charm of the era.
  • The glass ceiling of the room located behind the rotunda, which floods the space with natural light.

The building has a capacity of 1,100 people and has two rooms prepared to host conferences, forums, training courses, screenings and presentations, in addition to the main space. Its location is unbeatable, next to the María Luisa Park and just a few metres from the Plaza de España and the University of Seville.

🎭 The Casino de la Exposición today: a living and multifunctional space

Far from being a static museum, the Casino de la Exposición in Seville is a space that beats with the cultural life of the city. Its programme is broad and diverse, with art exhibitions, conferences, literary presentations, courses and sociocultural gatherings that follow one another throughout the year.

Among the most outstanding events it hosts are:

  • Seville European Film Festival: the Casino is one of the main venues, hosting press conferences and receptions.
  • Flamenco Biennial: the programme of the XXIV edition was presented in this space, consolidating it as the informational epicentre of the festival.
  • Candlelight Concerts: the cycle of concerts by candlelight has found in the rotunda of the Casino a magical stage where music and atmosphere merge.
  • Markets and temporary events: such as the market held in September or the Rastrillo de Nuevo Futuro.

In addition, the Casino rents its spaces for private events, presentations, gala dinners and all kinds of celebrations that seek a unique and unrepeatable setting.
