The Baluarte de la Candelaria, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, is much more than a fortification. It is a living space that has reinvented itself over the centuries.
Barracks, engineers' workshop and pigeon loft for the Army's pigeon post service in the past, today its casemates and walls host exhibitions, concerts and cultural events that attract visitors from all over the world.
A place where history and avant-garde go hand in hand overlooking the sea.
At The Sun Places we want you to discover this unique corner of Cádiz from the inside. That's why we invite you to learn about the history, secrets and programme of the Baluarte de la Candelaria, staying at our Luxury Apartments in Cádiz, located in the heart of the capital, near the Gran Teatro Falla, the Cádiz Cathedral and La Caleta Beach.
⚓ The Baluarte de la Candelaria was conceived as a key piece of Cádiz's defensive system. Its strategic position, between the Baluarte de San Felipe and the fortifications near La Caleta, allowed it to control the entrance and exit of the port.
Its cannons dominated the access channel, protecting the city from possible attacks by sea. It was, as its name suggests, a true bulwark, an impregnable bastion that defended the Tacita de Plata.
Today, the Baluarte de la Candelaria has abandoned its military function to embrace culture. It is the most ambitious defensive undertaking carried out in Cádiz in the second half of the 17th century and the best example of its kind preserved in the city.
A series of casemates are arranged along the side of the external walls, and the site is bordered by two 19th-century pavilions. Its renovation has turned it into a top-level exhibition and music space, home to the most outstanding events on the Cádiz cultural calendar.

🏛️ History of the Baluarte de la Candelaria: three centuries of defence and culture
The history of the Baluarte de la Candelaria begins in 1672, when the governor of the square, Diego Caballero de Illescas, ordered its construction. Taking advantage of a high point of land, this fortification was built, becoming the most ambitious defensive undertaking of the second half of the 17th century in Cádiz.
The Baluarte de la Candelaria was part of the maritime front of the bay that protected the entrance to the port and the north-western front of the city. Its cannons dominated the access channel, and its strategic position, between the Baluarte de San Felipe and the fortifications of La Caleta, made it a key piece of the defensive system.
Over the centuries, the Baluarte de la Candelaria has had multiple uses. It was a barracks, an engineers' workshop and a pigeon loft for the Army's pigeon post service.
In the 19th century, restoration works were carried out to adapt the building to new uses. And in the 20th century, the Baluarte de la Candelaria began its transformation into a cultural space, a process that culminated in its comprehensive renovation.
Today, the Baluarte de la Candelaria is a top-level exhibition and music space. A Sea Museum was planned for this venue, and it was reopened with that name.
Subsequently, it was consolidated as a permanent venue for exhibitions and cultural events. An example of how historical heritage can adapt to new times and continue to be useful to society.
