Antonio Gala, The Legacy of the Writer Who Chose Córdoba to Inspire

Antonio Gala is one of the most personal and widely read voices in Spanish literature of the second half of the 20th century. Born in Brazatortas (Ciudad Real) in 1930, but Cordoban at heart and in life, he cultivated all genres with an unmistakable hallmark: the blend of cultured and popular language, intimate reflection and social commitment.

His theatrical work brought him fame, his novel El manuscrito carmesí earned him the Planeta Prize in 1990, and his most valuable legacy was the Foundation he created in Córdoba to support young creators.

For The Sun Places, knowing his story means understanding an essential part of the city's cultural soul. Our Luxury Apartments in Córdoba are the perfect starting point to discover his footprint.

This writer's career is that of a man who turned literature into his destiny. He studied Law, Philosophy and Letters, and Political Sciences, but abandoned his administrative career to devote himself entirely to writing from 1963. His erudition did not prevent him from connecting with a broad audience, and his press articles were among the most read in Spain. His creation is traversed by themes such as the revision of Spanish history, the role of women and social commitment, always from a personal and profound gaze.

Who was Antonio Gala?

Antonio Gala was born on 2 October 1930 in Brazatortas, a town in Ciudad Real bordering Andalusia, but he lived his childhood and much of his adult life in Córdoba. From a very young age he showed a voracious inclination for reading, with classics such as San Juan de la Cruz or Rilke among his first influences.

His literary career took off in 1959 with the runner-up prize of the Adonáis Award for his first poetry book, Enemigo íntimo. In 1963 he published his first play, Los verdes campos del Edén, which earned him the National Calderón de la Barca Prize and established him as one of the great promises of Spanish theatre.

In the early 1970s, a serious illness forced him to use the cane that became his hallmark. He died in Córdoba on 28 May 2023, at the age of 92, leaving a vast body of work and a foundation that is still alive.

What are Antonio Gala's most important works?

Antonio Gala's production spans theatre, novel, poetry, essay and journalism.

  • In theatre, in addition to Los verdes campos del Edén, stand out Los buenos días perdidos (National Literature Prize, 1972), Anillos para una dama (1973), a revision of the Cid myth from Jimena's perspective that was a theatrical event of its time, Las cítaras colgadas de los árboles (1974), ¿Por qué corres, Ulises? (1975) and the musical Carmen Carmen (1988)
  • In novel, his debut was overwhelming: El manuscrito carmesí won the Planeta Prize in 1990, followed by La pasión turca (1993), adapted to film by Vicente Aranda, and La regla de tres (1996)
  • In poetry, in addition to Enemigo íntimo, he published Sonetos de La Zubia, Testamento andaluz and Poemas de amor. His work has been translated into the most important languages and remains a benchmark for readers of all generations

History of Antonio Gala: the writer who chose Córdoba

The writer's relationship with Córdoba transcends the biographical to become an emotional and creative bond. Although his birth was in Brazatortas, his childhood and training took place in the Andalusian city, and it was there that he decided to establish his residence and, later, his foundation. In October 2002 he made a dream come true that had accompanied him since his youth: to create a space where young creators from all over the world could devote themselves to their projects in freedom.

Thus was born the Antonio Gala Foundation for Young Creators, based in the former Convent of Corpus Christi. More than 300 students have passed through its residencies, and Gala himself considered this project as "the children he never had".

His ashes rest in the garden of the Foundation's novitiate, fulfilling his last wish. In June 2026, the façade of the headquarters was illuminated with a plaque reproducing his poem Córdoba, consolidating his memory in the city he chose.

Who organises or manages Antonio Gala's legacy?

Gala's legacy is managed by the Antonio Gala Foundation for Young Creators, a private non-profit institution based in Córdoba. Its board is chaired by Francisco Moreno, and its director is José María Gala, the writer's nephew.

The Foundation is responsible for keeping the author's memory alive, managing residencies for young artists and organising cultural activities open to the public, such as the Gala Fest chamber music festival and exhibitions at the Galería Espacio Gala.

In addition, the institution has announced the existence of unpublished work by the writer that could see the light in the future, which ensures that his literary voice remains present.

Antonio Gala's literary synergies: Machado and other masters

Gala's work and thought are traversed by admiration for other great Spanish poets. The connection with Antonio Machado is especially documented: Gala frequently quoted the famous verses of "las dos Españas" and Machado's idea that "in Spain the best is the people", and he dedicated a television script to him within his series Paisaje con figuras. The influence of Miguel Hernández on his poetry has also been noted, with shared symbols such as wheat, honey, the knife and blood. These affinities reveal a writer deeply rooted in the Spanish literary tradition, but with his own unmistakable voice.
