📍 Where is the Plaza de la Corredera de Córdoba located?
The Plaza de la Corredera de Córdoba is located in the heart of the city's historic centre, in the San Pedro neighbourhood, within the area known as the Axerquía. It is situated just a few metres from the Córdoba City Hall and about a 10-12 minute walk from the Mosque-Cathedral.
Its privileged location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring other emblematic spots such as the Jewish Quarter (Judería), the Calleja de las Flores and the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs.
📜 History of the Plaza de la Corredera de Córdoba: from an extramural esplanade to the main square
The history of the Plaza de la Corredera de Córdoba is long and fascinating. It is believed that until the 15th century, the site was a large esplanade outside the walls of the Cordoban Medina, used for trade and social activities even in Islamic times. The first mentions of the name "Corredera" appear in the 14th century, referring to the «Pilar (fountain) de la Corredera».
In the 15th century, it was known as «rastro» due to the sale of meat and fish, and in 1526, Emperor Charles V established a weekly market on the esplanade. The current configuration of the square is the result of works carried out between 1683 and 1687 by the corregidor Francisco Ronquillo Briceño, following the project of the Salamancan architect Antonio Ramós Valdés.
The works, which cost 752,972 reales, aimed to beautify the surroundings and, above all, improve the safety of public spectacles after a wooden grandstand nearly collapsed during a bullfight.
The construction was not comprehensive: the owners of the houses facing the square gradually acquired the metres of facade they wanted for their balconies — 46% ecclesiastical and 44% noble.
🏛️ Architecture and unique buildings of the Plaza de la Corredera de Córdoba
The Plaza de la Corredera de Córdoba stands out for its uniform Castilian-style architecture, with arcades on the ground floor (where bars and shops are now located) and balconies on the three upper floors. It is the only quadrangular main square in Andalusia.
Despite the uniformity of the complex, two buildings predating the 17th-century renovation survive, contrasting with this uniformity:
- Mercado de Sánchez Peña: Former prison and corregidor's house, built between 1583 and 1586. It was the site where the city's first steam engine was installed for a hat factory. Since the late 19th century, it has functioned as a food market.
- Casas de Doña Ana Jacinto Angulo: Known as the "House of Doña Jacinta", the owner managed to save her home from demolition thanks to a royal decree from King Charles II. It is located at the southwest corner of the square and consists of three floors with small balconies separated by columns.
- El Pósito: A 16th-century civil building that lost its beautiful facade of polylobed arches when the new square was built. It still retains its naves, awaiting restoration.
Furthermore, Calle Toril has been preserved, named after its function: it was the street along which bulls were led from the pens to the square for bullfights.
🏟️ Spectacles and historical uses of the Plaza de la Corredera de Córdoba
Throughout its history, the Plaza de la Corredera de Córdoba has been the stage for all kinds of events, both festive and tragic:
- Bullfights: This is where its name comes from. The square was used as a bullring for centuries, attracting figures such as King Philip IV and Cosimo de' Medici himself. The last bullfight was held in 1846, when the Los Tejares bullring had already been built.
- Autos da fé and executions: The Spanish Inquisition used the square to hold autos da fé, with around 40 executions between 1639 and 1739. During the French occupation (1810-1812), about 76 individuals died by hanging or garrotting. The last execution took place in 1838.
- Celebrations and festivities: In 1571, the victory at the Battle of Lepanto was celebrated with a simulated naval battle in the square itself. There were also celebrations for the peace with Great Britain (1749), the visit of the Moroccan ambassador (1766) and the visit of Charles IV (1796).
- Food market: In 1896, a large covered market was built in the centre of the square, which operated until 1946. It was demolished in 1959, and during excavations to build another underground market, numerous Roman mosaics were found, now on display at the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs.
