🌉 The Roman Bridge of Córdoba: a symbol of two thousand years that unites history, culture and Andalusia
In the heart of Córdoba, over the majestic Guadalquivir River, stands The Roman Bridge of Córdoba, one of the best-preserved Roman engineering works in Spain and an indisputable emblem of the Andalusian city. This bridge is not just a vestige of the past: it is a silent witness to conquests, cultures and centuries of history. At The Sun Places we invite you to walk its stones and discover why it remains a bridge between eras and sensations.
📍 Where is the Roman Bridge of Córdoba?
The Roman Bridge of Córdoba is located in the historic centre of the city, next to the emblematic Mosque-Cathedral. It crosses the Guadalquivir River from the Roman triumphal arch (Puerta del Puente) to the Calahorra Tower, at the southern end. It is the axis that connects the monumental centre with the Campo de la Verdad neighbourhood and the Archaeological Museum of Córdoba.
📜 History of the Roman Bridge of Córdoba
The original construction of The Roman Bridge of Córdoba dates back to the 1st century BC, during the time of the Colonia Patricia (the Roman foundation of Córdoba). It formed part of the Via Augusta, the great road that connected Rome with Cádiz. Over the centuries, it was remodelled by the Muslims (8th to 10th centuries) and later by the Catholic Monarchs and other monarchs, but its Roman essence remains intact. In fact, it still preserves 16 arches – of the original 17 – that have withstood floods, wars and the passage of 21 centuries.
⚙️ Key facts about the Roman Bridge of Córdoba:
- Construction: 1st century BC (about 2,100 years ago).
- Total length: Approximately 331 metres.
- Number of arches: 16 semicircular arches (originally 17).
- Width: About 9 metres.
- Materials: Stone ashlar (granite and sandstone), with medieval additions.
- River it crosses: Guadalquivir, the great river of Andalusia.
🏰 The Roman Bridge of Córdoba and its guardian: the Calahorra Tower
Just at the end of The Roman Bridge of Córdoba, on its southern bank, stands the imposing Calahorra Tower. Its name comes from the Arabic Qalat Yahur (castle of Yahur), although some historians believe it may have been built on a Roman base.
The current structure was built in the 13th century by the Almohads during Muslim rule, and after the Christian conquest of 1236 by Ferdinand III the Saint, it became a key defensive stronghold.
Here, in 1369, the famous Battle of Campo de la Verdad was fought between Peter I the Cruel and his half-brother Henry of Trastámara (later Henry II), who emerged victorious and reinforced the tower with a moat and a drawbridge. Centuries later, the tower served as a prison for nobles and soldiers, a military barracks and even a girls' school in the 19th century.
Today, restored, it houses the fascinating Al-Andalus Living Museum, a tribute to the coexistence of the three cultures (Christian, Jewish and Muslim) in the caliphal Córdoba. Climbing its three levels and 14 rooms offers the best views of the bridge, the river and the Mosque.
⏳How many centuries old is the Roman Bridge of Córdoba?
The Roman Bridge of Córdoba is 21 centuries old (from the 1st century BC to the 21st century AD). That is, more than two thousand years. The Calahorra Tower, although younger (13 centuries later), completes the ensemble with its almost 800 years of defensive history.
🌊 The Guadalquivir River and the Roman Bridge of Córdoba
The Guadalquivir River –whose name comes from the Arabic al-wādī al-kabīr (the great river)– is the fifth longest river on the Iberian Peninsula (657 km) and the only navigable one from Seville to the Atlantic. As it passes through Córdoba, it embraces The Roman Bridge and reflects the silhouette of the Calahorra Tower, creating one of the most famous postcards of Andalusia.

- Roman Bridge of Mérida (Lusitania): 1st century BC, 60 arches (originally), over the Guadiana. It is longer (792 m) but less well-known tourist-wise.
