The Patios of Córdoba are much more than a flower competition: they are the most genuine expression of Andalusian joy, hospitality and popular tradition.
For two weeks in May, the historic centre of Córdoba is transformed into a labyrinth of colour and aroma where neighbours open their homes to proudly show off their patios decorated with flowerpots, climbing plants and centuries-old fountains.
Declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2012, The Patios of Córdoba attract thousands of visitors from all over the world.
At The Sun Places we invite you to discover this wonder with a luxury experience: from our Luxury Apartments in Córdoba you can visit the most emblematic patios without queues, with private guides and exclusive tastings.
When are the Patios of Córdoba?
📅 The Patios of Córdoba are held during the first and second fortnight of May, coinciding with the Córdoba Patios Festival.
In 2026, the planned dates are from 2 to 17 May (check official confirmation from Córdoba City Council). The official competition takes place over two full weekends, with opening hours from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The peak time is usually the second weekend, when the winners are announced.
The Patios of Córdoba participants are grouped into two categories: Ancient Patios (traditional architecture, with a central fountain and stone floor) and Modern Patios (with more innovative decoration). In addition, there is a special Popular Architecture category.
During the festival, night-time visits with special lighting and flamenco concerts in the patios are also organised. The Sun Places recommends booking at least three months in advance to guarantee entry to the most exclusive patios.
📍Where are the Patios of Córdoba located?
The Patios of Córdoba are distributed throughout several neighbourhoods of the historic centre. The areas with the highest concentration are: the San Basilio Neighbourhood (a 5-minute walk from the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs), the Jewish Quarter (next to Flower Alley and the Synagogue), the Santa Marina Neighbourhood and the San Basilio Neighbourhood (10 minutes from Plaza de la Corredera).
There are also patios on Avenida del Corregidor and Ronda de los Tejares. All of them are located within a 15-20 minute walk from the Mosque-Cathedral.
The patios are signposted with blue signs and an official map is given out at the Tourist Office.
Our Luxury Apartments in Córdoba are strategically located so you can walk to most of the patios, avoiding car journeys.
📜 History of the Patios of Córdoba
The history of The Patios of Córdoba dates back to Roman times, when aristocratic houses already had interior garden atriums. But it was during Muslim rule (8th to 13th centuries) that the patio became the centrepiece of Cordoban housing. The Arabs introduced the central fountain, orange trees and irrigation systems using ditches.
After the Reconquista (1236), Christian houses adopted the Andalusian patio model, adding climbing plants, clay pots and wrought iron grilles. In the 19th century, with the expansion of the working class, casas de vecinos (collective housing with a common patio) emerged, where tenants competed in a friendly manner to have the prettiest patio. The first official Patios of Córdoba competition was organised in 1921, during the Fiestas de la Salud, with only 16 participating patios.
In 1933, the City Council institutionalised the competition with the current categories. During the Civil War (1936-1939) it was suspended, but it recovered strongly in the 1960s. The big boost came in 1980, when the Association of Friends of the Cordoban Patios was created. In 2012, UNESCO granted the declaration of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognising not only the patios but also the traditional crafts (potters, blacksmiths, gardeners) and the oral transmission of knowledge. Today,
The Patios of Córdoba have more than 50 patios open to the public and receive more than 200,000 visits during the festival. Each patio is a living legacy: the pots of geraniums, gitanillas, carnations and jasmine are inherited from generation to generation, and the water from the fountain always runs clean to provide coolness. The competing neighbours spend months pruning, watering and cleaning.
The Sun Places offers you a private historical tour with a local antique dealer who will tell you anecdotes about century-old patios such as the Patio de la Judería or the Patio de la Calle Pavía.
🏛️ Who organises the Patios of Córdoba?
The Patios of Córdoba are organised by the Córdoba City Council through the Municipal Urban Planning Department, the Tourism Department and the UNESCO Intangible Heritage Network. The Córdoba Provincial Council, the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Association of Friends of the Cordoban Patios (founded in 1982) also collaborate.
The competition jury is made up of architects, gardeners, historians and specialised journalists. The prizes amount to several thousand euros in each category. In addition, the Municipal Tourist Office publishes maps, timetables and organises free guided tours in Spanish and English.
Private companies such as The Sun Places collaborate by offering premium experiences: private tours in small groups, access to patios that are not on the mass circuits (such as patios in cloistered convents or private palaces), and wine and tapas tastings within the patios themselves.
If you want to experience The Patios of Córdoba with maximum luxury and without crowds, trust our official guides.
🍽️ Seville and Cordoban gastronomy during the Patios of Córdoba: fried fish, spinach with chickpeas and Sherry wine
Although The Patios of Córdoba are the main attraction, you cannot leave without trying the rich Seville and Cordoban gastronomy.
During the festival, many patios set up improvised bars where you can taste Andalusian fried fish (anchovies, marinated fish, squid), spinach with chickpeas (typical Andalusian dish of Arab origin), Cordoban Salmorejo (thicker than gazpacho, with ham and hard-boiled egg), flamenquín (breaded ham and pork roll) and oxtail (seasonal stew).
The star wines are Sherry wine (fino, manzanilla, amontillado) and the wines from the D.O. Montilla-Moriles (sweet pedro ximénez).
In Plaza de la Corredera you will find historic taverns such as Taberna La Cuarta (famous for its montaditos) and Bodegas Campos (traditional cuisine in an 18th-century courtyard).
For haute cuisine, the Michelin-starred restaurants in Córdoba are Restaurante Noor (three stars, contemporary Andalusian cuisine), Choco (market cuisine) and ReComiendo
The Sun Places recommends pairing spinach with chickpeas with an amontillado Sherry wine, and fried fish with a very cold beer. We arrange private reservations at the best restaurants with patio terraces.
🏅 What the Patios of Córdoba represent for Córdoba, Andalusia and The Sun Places
For Córdoba, The Patios of Córdoba are its most universal identity sign, a social and tourist phenomenon that generates thousands of temporary jobs and projects the city to the world as "the capital of flowers".
For Andalusia, these patios symbolise the survival of popular culture, pottery craftsmanship (the fired clay pots are made in the towns of La Rambla and Monturque) and the love of outdoor living.
For The Sun Places, The Patios of Córdoba represent the perfect opportunity to combine luxury, authenticity and tradition. When you stay in our Luxury Apartments in Córdoba, you not only visit patios: you live like a local, sharing conversation with the owners, learning to water their geraniums and savouring their hospitality.
Furthermore, the event connects with our values of sustainability (many patios use well water and drip irrigation) and promotion of intangible heritage.
Because at The Sun Places we believe that travelling is transforming, and there is no more beautiful transformation than leaving a Cordoban patio with your hands full of petals and your heart overflowing with joy.
🏘️ Particularities of the Patios of Córdoba: María Luisa Park is not in Córdoba, but the Archive of the Indies, Triana Neighbourhood and Calle Betis are (Seville curiosity)
Although The Patios of Córdoba are the focus, we cannot help but mention the Sevillian influence in Andalusia.
If you extend your trip to Seville (just 45 minutes by AVE train from Córdoba or we can offer you a private transfer), you can visit:
María Luisa Park, the green lung of the city with squares inspired by the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition;
Triana Neighbourhood and its people, the birthplace of flamenco and ceramics, on the other side of the Guadalquivir River
Calle Betis, a riverside promenade full of bars with views of the Torre del Oro
Archive of the Indies, where the documents of the conquest of America are kept (declared a World Heritage Site).
But in Córdoba, the particularities of The Patios of Córdoba are unique: each patio has its own well or century-old fountain, the pots are hung at different heights to make the most of the light, and the colours follow a tradition: indigo blue for the grilles, white limewash for the walls, and emerald green for the plants.
Red geraniums symbolise passion, white carnations purity and jasmine hospitality (its fragrance floods the nights of May). Another curious detail: neighbours often leave a jug of cool water for visitors. And if you listen carefully, you will hear the constant cloc-cloc of the water from the fountain, which according to tradition wards off evil spirits.
