⛰️Tibidabo: the magical mountain of Barcelona, temple, attractions and the best viewpoint of Collserola

What is Tibidabo?

At the highest point of the Collserola mountain range, watching over Barcelona from 512 metres above sea level, stands Tibidabo. It is not just a mountain: it is a symbol, an unforgettable viewpoint, the oldest amusement park in Spain and the home of an imposing temple crowned by a statue of the Sacred Heart.

At The Sun Places we invite you to discover this unique corner of the city, because knowing Tibidabo is understanding the most authentic essence of Barcelona.

If you come to Barcelona with children, this is your best option. If you want to know the Collserola mountain range (the Green Lung of Barcelona), this is your best option.

What is the history of Tibidabo?

📜 History and origin: from bandits' lair to magical mountain

The history of Tibidabo dates back to the 19th century. Until then, this mountain had been a place for grazing goats and a hideout for bandits. Everything changed in 1899, when the pharmacist Salvador Andreu launched an ambitious project to transform the highest peak of Collserola into a large leisure and entertainment centre.

To achieve this, he proposed the creation of a tram line, a funicular and an amusement park. Thus, on 29 October 1901, the Blue Tram and the Tibidabo Funicular were inaugurated, the first in Spain. From that moment on, Tibidabo became the favourite place for the people of Barcelona to enjoy days of celebration and leisure.

The origin of the name "Tibidabo" is also fascinating. It was formerly called Puig de l'Àliga (Eagle Hill) and there is a medieval legend that gave it its current name.

🎢 Tibidabo Amusement Park: the oldest in Spain and the one that inspired Walt Disney

Tibidabo Amusement Park, located at the summit of Tibidabo, is the oldest operating amusement park in Spain, the third oldest in Europe and one of the oldest in the world. Its first rides began operating in 1905, with mirrors, telescopes, swings, automatons, Flobert shooting and a homing pigeon station.

Among the most emblematic attractions still in operation are:

  • L'Avió (The Aeroplane) (1928), one of the world's first flight simulators that is propelled by its own propeller.
  • The Automaton Museum, which houses more than 40 pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries made of wood and metal, and is considered one of the best in the world.
  • La Talaia (The Watchtower), a structure over 90 years old that takes visitors up to 50 metres high.
  • In addition, the park has incorporated modern attractions such as roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, bumper cars and the Tibicar.
  • It is said that Walt Disney declared that Tibidabo Amusement Park was one of the most magical places he had ever visited and that he was inspired by it when designing his own parks. In 1957, he tried to buy the automaton collection with a blank cheque, but the company refused to sell it.

⛪Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart: the church that watches over Barcelona

Next to Tibidabo Amusement Park stands the imposing Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the work of architect Enric Sagnier, whose construction began in 1902 and was not completed until 1961. It is a historicist building that combines Neo-Byzantine, Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic elements. The façade is crowned by a majestic bronze statue of the Sacred Heart, the work of Josep Miret.

A lift allows you to go up to the highest part of the temple, 575 metres above sea level, from where you get the best panoramic views of Barcelona. On a clear day, it is even possible to see the silhouette of the island of Mallorca.

To the right of the temple, the small Neo-Gothic hermitage built in 1886 is still preserved, when there was nothing around it.

🌳Tibidabo and the Collserola mountain range: nature and unique viewpoints

Tibidabo, at 512 metres high, is the highest peak in the entire Collserola mountain range. All its surroundings are part of the Collserola Natural Park, the great green lung of Barcelona. From its summit you can see the whole city, the Mediterranean Sea and, on clear days, the Montserrat massif and the Cadí-Moixeró mountain range.

In the immediate vicinity there are also two other essential attractions. The Fabra Observatory (1904), one of the oldest in the world still in operation, which also organises dinners with stargazing. Torre de Collserola (1992), a 288-metre-high engineering work with a glass-enclosed viewpoint on its tenth floor.

🚋How to get to Tibidabo?: Blue Tram and Funicular, a journey with history

To get to Tibidabo you can take a charming route. From Plaça John F. Kennedy, the Blue Tram (Tramvia Blau), inaugurated in 1901, runs 1,276 metres along Avinguda del Tibidabo between majestic Modernist mansions. Once at Plaça del Doctor Andreu, you take the Tibidabo Funicular (1901), the first in Spain.

🥾 The healthy route of Tibidabo: walking, breathing and enjoying a vermouth with the best views

If you like walking and want to enjoy Tibidabo in an active, quiet and very rewarding way, you have two perfect options to recharge your batteries and contemplate Barcelona from the heights.

Option 1: Uphill walk from the end of the Blue Tram

  • You can get off at the final stop of the Blue Tram (Plaça del Doctor Andreu) and, instead of taking the funicular, walk up along the road or along the paths of the Collserola park. The route is about 2 kilometres with a gentle slope and is perfectly signposted. In about 30-40 minutes you will reach the summit, next to the Temple and the Amusement Park. The reward: increasingly wider views of the city as you gain height.

Option 2: Relaxed descent from the Amusement Park

  • After visiting the park or the temple, you can walk down to the Blue Tram area following the same path, but downhill. It is much gentler and allows you to stop at the natural viewpoints along the way.

The star plan: vermouth with views of Barcelona at Mirablau or Particular

Whether you walk up or down, you cannot leave without having a vermouth (or a beer, or a soft drink) at two of the bars with the most spectacular terraces in Barcelona:

  • Mirablau: Located on Avinguda del Tibidabo, right next to the Blue Tram stop. Its outdoor terrace offers a 180-degree panoramic view of Barcelona, from the sea to Montjuïc. It is the perfect place to sit, regain energy and feel like the king of the world for a moment.
  • Particular: A little higher up, also on Avinguda del Tibidabo, with a more intimate atmosphere and equally impressive views.

Both are accessible whether you are coming up from the Blue Tram or have come down from the park. They are healthy, easily accessible routes, ideal for recharging your batteries or simply seeing the city from above without rushing.

📌 The Sun Places tip: Take advantage of sunset to do this plan. The golden light over Barcelona, the sea reflecting the colours of the sunset and a vermouth in hand. There are few more Barcelona-style and memorable experiences.

🔭 Other attractions of Tibidabo

The Fabra Observatory (1901), located on the slope of Tibidabo, is one of the oldest observatories in the world still in operation. It is dedicated to astronomy, meteorology and seismology. It also organises night-time observation sessions with telescopes and dinners with star tasting.

Torre de Collserola was built for the 1992 Olympic Games. From its glass-enclosed viewpoint, you get a 360-degree view that reaches, on clear days, as far as the Balearic Islands.
