The Sun Places invites you to discover it, staying in our Luxury Apartments in Madrid.
The Mercado de San Miguel de Madrid is much more than a place to eat; it is a sensory experience that combines history, architecture, gastronomy and atmosphere.
Its location, in the heart of Habsburg Madrid, makes it a meeting point between the most traditional and contemporary luxury.
Below, we tell you everything you cannot miss in this temple of Madrid gastronomy, and how to combine it with other luxury experiences we have explored in our articles.
📜 History of the Mercado de San Miguel de Madrid
The history of the Mercado de San Miguel de Madrid dates back to the Middle Ages, when the area was an open market surrounded by craft stalls.
In 1809, during the reign of Joseph Bonaparte, the old church of San Miguel de los Octoes was demolished, and in its place a small square was left where the market that would inherit the name of the old parish was planned to be built.
For decades it was an open-air market specialising in fish sales.
The current building was constructed between 1913 and 1916 under the direction of architect Alfonso Dubé y Díez, inspired by the great European iron markets such as the Halles de Paris.
Inaugurated in May 1916 as a food market, it operated for decades as a neighbourhood market until, with the loss of clientele, it fell into decline.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, its comprehensive rehabilitation was promoted, and in May 2009 it reopened as Spain's first gastronomic market. In 2018, the market underwent a consolidation of its gastronomic content.
In 2026, the Mercado de San Miguel de Madrid has been valued at €200 million and has come under the control of the Brenninkmeijer family, owners of C&A, consolidating its position as one of the most sought-after assets in central Madrid.
Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, this building is the only surviving iron market in the capital.

🏛️ Architecture of the Mercado de San Miguel de Madrid, the iron and glass jewel
The Mercado de San Miguel de Madrid is one of the best examples of early 20th-century iron architecture in Madrid.
Designed by Alfonso Dubé y Díez, its iron and glass structure allows natural light to enter, creating an open and bright space.
The market has two floors and a surface area of 1,200 square metres.
Its facade combines iron and glass, and at the top it features a ceramic crest that crowns its roof.
During its 2009 renovation, original elements were restored such as the oak and glass marquetry, the fernandinas street lamps (a copy of those in the Royal Palace), the granite floor, the cast iron pillars and the dovecotes.
Its design, reminiscent of London's Crystal Palace, makes it one of the most photographed buildings in the city.
In 2026, the Mercado de San Miguel de Madrid remains the only surviving iron market in Madrid, an architectural jewel that combines history, modernity and gastronomy.
🛍️ Stalls and gastronomic offering of the Mercado de San Miguel de Madrid
The Mercado de San Miguel de Madrid houses more than 30 stalls offering a curated selection of Spain's finest gastronomic products. Some of the most emblematic are:
- Iberian ham: Acorn-fed ham is the great star of the market, with specialised stalls offering cuts on the spot, perfect to accompany with a glass of wine.
