The Museo Nacional del Prado is one of the most outstanding art museums in the world. Its permanent collection, spanning from the 12th to the 19th century, is a fascinating journey through the history of Western painting. Below, we tell you everything you cannot miss in this temple of art.

📜  History of the Museo Nacional del Prado

The history of the Museo Nacional del Prado dates back to the late 18th century, when King Charles III commissioned the architect Juan de Villanueva to build a Cabinet of Natural Sciences.

The original project was designed in 1786, but construction was halted by the Napoleonic invasion. It was not until 1819, under the reign of Ferdinand VII, that the Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture was inaugurated, with 311 works from the royal collections.

The first exhibition already included works by great masters such as Zurbarán, Murillo, Ribera and Velázquez. During the 19th century, the Museo Nacional del Prado grew through the disentailment laws (which brought works from convents and monasteries) and through donations and private bequests.

In the 20th century, the museum survived the Spanish Civil War (its works were evacuated to Valencia and then to Geneva) and consolidated itself as one of the most important art galleries in the world.

Today, the Museo Nacional del Prado is one of the most visited museums in the capital, and its collection exceeds 39,000 works.

🖼️  Masterpieces of the Museo Nacional del Prado

The collection of the Museo Nacional del Prado is so extensive and varied that it is difficult to highlight only a few works. However, these are some of the most emblematic ones you cannot miss:

  • Las Meninas, by Diego Velázquez: The masterpiece of the Museo Nacional del Prado and perhaps the most analysed painting in history. Painted in 1656, Velázquez portrays himself while painting King Philip IV and Queen Mariana of Austria, with the Infanta Margarita and her ladies-in-waiting as the main figures.
  • The 3rd of May in Madrid (The Executions), by Francisco de Goya: One of the most powerful paintings in the history of art. It depicts the executions of Madrid civilians by Napoleonic troops in 1808. It is a key work for understanding 19th-century Spain and a jewel of the Museo Nacional del Prado.
  • The Garden of Earthly Delights, by Hieronymus Bosch: A triptych full of symbolism and surreal details. It represents Paradise, Sin and Hell. It is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic works in the Museo Nacional del Prado.
  • The Annunciation, by Fra Angelico: A Renaissance panel of exceptional beauty and purity. It depicts the moment when the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin that she will be the mother of Jesus.
  • The Knight with His Hand on His Breast, by El Greco: An icon of Spanish Mannerism. The gaze and elegance of the figure make it one of the most enigmatic portraits in the Museo Nacional del Prado.
  • The Three Graces, by Rubens: A celebration of feminine beauty and fertility. Rubens masterfully depicts his ideal of womanhood. It is a masterpiece of the Flemish school in the Museo Nacional del Prado.

In addition to these works, the Museo Nacional del Prado has an extensive collection of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Romantic art, with works by Titian, Rembrandt, Murillo, Zurbarán, Caravaggio and many other great masters.

🏛️  The Juan de Villanueva building: architecture and extensions

The building of the Museo Nacional del Prado, known as the Villanueva Building, was designed by Juan de Villanueva in 1785.

Originally conceived to house the Royal Cabinet of Natural History, its design is based on the gallery-corridor, an architectural type in vogue in 18th-century Europe.

The building has been extended and renovated on several occasions: in 1853, 1882, 1885, 1914-1921, 1943-1946, 1954-1956 and 2001-2007. The last major extension, designed by Rafael Moneo, connected the Villanueva Building with the former Casón del Buen Retiro building, creating a larger and more modern exhibition space.

Today, the Museo Nacional del Prado is one of the most emblematic buildings in Madrid and an example of Spanish neoclassical architecture.
