Puerto Banús: The Heart of Luxury

Puerto Banús: The Heart of Luxury

🌊 An Icon of Mediterranean Luxury

What is Puerto Banús?

If there is one place on the Costa del Sol that needs no introduction, it is Puerto Banús. Located just 6 kilometres west of Marbella, this marina has been, since its opening in 1970, the epicentre of luxury, glamour and exclusivity in the Mediterranean.

Known as the playground of millionaires, celebrities and aristocrats, Puerto Banús is a destination where superyachts, sports cars, high-fashion boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants come together in an environment that perfectly combines Andalusian architecture with the most cosmopolitan lifestyle.

With an influx of almost 5 million visitors per year, Puerto Banús is the fourth most expensive marina in the world to dock a yacht and holds the Gold Medal for Tourist Merit, a recognition of its contribution to the tourist development of the Costa del Sol.

What is the History of Puerto Banús?

📜 History: From José Banús's Dream to the Jet Set Symbol

The history of Puerto Banús is the story of a bold vision. In the 1960s, property developer José Banús Masdeu began building a luxurious residential area called Nueva Andalucía. Everything changed when he met architect Noldi Schreck, who had participated in the design of the iconic Beverly Hills neighbourhood and was working at the Marbella Club Hotel. Schreck convinced Banús to abandon his initial plans to build skyscrapers and instead bet on a different concept: a Mediterranean village with an Andalusian style and a marina, combining tradition with exclusivity.

Construction began in 1966, and in May 1970, Puerto Banús opened its doors with a lavish inauguration attended by 1,500 guests from high society. Among them were the Prince and Princess of Spain (Juan Carlos and Sofía), the Prince and Princess of Monaco (Rainier and Grace Kelly), Roman Polanski, Hugh Hefner and a young Julio Iglesias who provided the evening's entertainment. Since then, the port has continued to grow, attracting members of the Saudi royal family, Hollywood stars and elite athletes.

🏛️ What to See in Puerto Banús?

⚓ The Marina: Yachts and Over 900 Moorings

  • The heart of Puerto Banús is its marina, where over 900 moorings for vessels up to 50 metres in length are lined up. Strolling along its docks is an experience in itself: here you can admire some of the world's most impressive superyachts, docked alongside speedboats and luxury pleasure craft. The port is protected by breakwaters and covers an area of 15 hectares. It is the perfect setting for the "see and be seen" culture that characterises this destination.

🌟 Puerto Banús Walk of Fame (Avenida José Banús)

  • Also known as the Boulevard of Fame, this wide avenue is flanked by starfish-shaped tiles that pay tribute to celebrities who have helped promote Marbella internationally. Among the names you can find are: Antonio Banderas, Julio Iglesias, Carmen Sevilla, Alejandro Sanz, Carmen Thyssen, Los del Río, Vicente del Bosque and chef Dani García, among many others. It is a must-see for lovers of popular culture.

🎭 Antonio Banderas Square

  • In the very centre of Puerto Banús, this square has become a meeting point for both tourists and locals. During the summer months, it hosts an International Craft Fair with a market where you can find necklaces, bracelets and other handmade products. At Christmas, the square is transformed with an ice rink that attracts entire families.

🎨 The Sculpture of Victory

  • At the roundabout of Avenida de Julio Iglesias with Naciones Unidas stands an imposing sculpture over 30 metres high representing a man with his arms open looking out to sea. It is the work of Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, known for his monumental statues, and in Marbella it is popularly known as the "statue of the Russian".

🦏 Dalí's Rhinoceros

  • One of the most unique artistic jewels of Puerto Banús is the sculpture "Rhinoceros dressed in lace" (1956), a three-tonne work by Salvador Dalí located at one of the entrance roundabouts to the port. It is a cultural icon that combines the surrealism of the Catalan genius with the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the enclave.

🌊 Julio Iglesias Avenue

  • As a thank you to the singer for his work promoting Marbella internationally, the City Council gave his name to this avenue in 2002. Julio Iglesias was hired to sing at the port's opening in 1970 and his relationship with the area has continued over the years. At the end of the avenue stands the Sculpture of Victory.
